The Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday announced the team will wear a No. 3 decal on the back of its helmets throughout this season in memoriam of late quarterback Dwayne Haskins.
Haskins, who spent last season as the Steelers’ No. 3 QB, died in April. He wore No. 3.
A star during his final season at Ohio State in 2018, Haskins was a first-round pick of the then-Washington Redskins. He was released before the end of his second season with the team, and the Steelers signed him the following month.
Haskins spent all of 2021 as a backup to starter Ben Roethlisberger and then-No. 2 Mason Rudolph. He died early in the morning April 9 when he was struck by a dump truck while walking on an interstate near the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Haskins was 24 years old. He was in Florida to train with Steelers offensive teammates.
Offensive co-captain Najee Harris said Friday that he repeatedly has urged coach Mike Tomlin to encourage tributes to Haskins throughout this season.
“I talked to him as much as possible, what we want as a team,” Harris said. “We all want to recognize Dwayne any way we can this year throughout, so putting the ‘3’ on the back of the helmet is part of that.”
