After making four consecutive picks on defense, the Pittsburgh Steelers closed their portion of the NFL Draft on Saturday by switching to special teams.
Pressley Harvin III, the strong-legged punter from Georgia Tech, was the Steelers’ second pick of the seventh round, No. 254 overall.
Harvin was the only punter taken in the draft.
Harvin is a big-bodied specialist, packing 263 pounds onto his 5-foot-11 frame. As a senior, he became the first African-American to win the Ray Guy Award, which is given annually to the best punter in Division I.
Harvin led all FBS punters as a senior by averaging 48 yards per attempt. He had 21 fair catches on 45 punts, and he played 18 attempts inside the 20-yard line with just three touchbacks.
A starter for all four of his seasons with the Yellow Jackets, Harvin averaged 44.7 yards per attempt for his career.
“He has a naturally powerful leg,” general manager Kevin Colbert said. “We’re excited to have him come in and join the competition.”
Harvin will challenge incumbent Jordan Berry for the starting job with the Steelers. Berry was cut before the start of the season in 2020, but he was re-signed after five games to replace Dustin Colquitt. Berry averaged a career-best 45.8 yards per punt, and his net average of 40.5 yards was the second-best of his six seasons with the Steelers.
Second-year punter Corliss Waitman spent the 2020 season on the practice squad. It is unlikely the Steelers will take three punters to training camp.
