Steelers waive former Central Catholic, Penn State lineman Stefen Wisniewski
Stefen Wisniewski may never get to suit up for the Pittsburgh Steelers for a game at Heinz Field.
Wisniewski, the Central Catholic graduate and former Penn State player, was waived Saturday to make room on the 53-man roster for linebackers Avery Williamson and Jayrone Elliott.
The Steelers also waived running back Trey Edmunds.
Williamson was acquired from the New York Jets earlier in the week to provide depth at inside linebacker.
Wisniewski, 31, was signed to a two-year, $2.85 million contract in the offseason to be the primary interior backup on the offensive line.
Wisniewski, however, started the season opener at the New York Giants because of an injury to David DeCastro. He left the game late in the fourth quarter with a torn pectoral muscle that landed him on injured reserve.
The Steelers activated Wisniewski on Wednesday, but he did not take part in practice until Friday and that was only on a limited basis. Rookie Kevin Dotson has taken Wisniewski’s place at guard, and J.C. Hassenauer has served as the No. 2 center.
Edmunds was promoted to the active roster last weekend. He could be re-signed to the practice squad.
The Steelers also announced Saturday that rookie safety Antoine Brooks Jr. has been elevated from the practice squad for Sunday’s game at Dallas. He will return to the practice squad after the game.
Brooks was elevated last week at Baltimore but did not appear in the game.
The Steelers also signed defensive tackle Demarcus Christmas to the practice squad. Christmas, 25, was a sixth-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2019 and spent a few weeks on that team’s practice squad this year before being released Oct. 6.
