The Pittsburgh Steelers waived special-teamer Trey Edmunds on Tuesday, the first of what promise to be many personnel moves as they embark on their offseason after Sunday’s playoff defeat.

A running back by trade, Edmunds is the older brother of Steelers safety Terrell Edmunds. Trey Edmunds ended the season on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury. He was active for four Steelers games this season, appearing in four special-teams snaps and seven snaps on offense.

Edmunds has played 19 games for the Steelers over the past three seasons after being a core special-teamer for the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted rookie in 2017. Edmunds has 22 carries for 92 yards and six catches for 48 yards in that time in addition to six special-teams tackles and interception on a fake punt attempt.

Terrell Edmunds just completed his third NFL season and has been the Steelers starting strong safety since he was a first-round pick in 2018. The Steelers have until early May to exercise a fifth-year option on his contract.

The Steelers are expected to soon add several players to their offseason roster by signing them to reserve/future deals. Edmunds spent time on the Steelers practice squad each of the past three seasons.

The timing of the move suggests the Steelers are freeing Edmunds to be able sign with a team that is still alive in the playoffs.
