Steelers WR Chase Claypool leaves practice with left leg injury, not believed serious

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool needed the assistance of two teammates to make it off the Heinz Field turf after suffering an apparent injury to his left leg Tuesday.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and tight end Eric Ebron supported Claypool as he came off the field during the waning moments of Tuesday’s two-hour training-camp practice. A member of the team medical staff accompanied them to a stairwell at the end of the sidelines, and head athletic trainer John Norwig met the group as they headed into the locker room.

There was no immediate word from the Steelers about the nature of Claypool’s injury — “He’s being evaluated,” coach Mike Tomlin said — but reports from the NFL Network and ESPN suggest the ailment is not serious.

A message posted to the verified Twitter account of reporter Mike Garafolo read that Claypool “did not suffer a significant injury in practice today, sources say. Major sigh of relief for Pittsburgh. We’ll see what the resulting diagnosis is but definite relief after how it looked.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter later cited an unnamed source when he tweeted, “Claypool suffered a ‘minor ankle sprain’ today and ‘should be fine.’ ”

All is well.

Later in the evening, a message on Claypool’s Twitter read, “All is well.”

The Steelers’ top draft pick last season — No. 49 overall — Claypool spent much of 2020 under consideration for the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Though his production slowed in the season’s final weeks, Claypool ended with 62 catches for 873 yards and 11 total touchdowns.
