Devin Bush went from being hyped as the next great Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker to merely being able to hang on to his starting job. He’s had a relatively consistent, if unspectacular, fourth NFL season to this point — but Sunday, Bush delivered a critical big play.

Bush batted down a pass intended for Chris Godwin in the end zone on a late 2-point conversion try that would have pulled the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into a tie with the Steelers with 4 minutes, 45 seconds left in Sunday’s game.

Instead, Tampa Bay never touched the ball again, and the Steelers held on for a 20-18 victory that snapped a four-game losing streak.

“Devin had the big play at the end on the 2-point, which was huge,” defensive captain Cameron Heyward said. “He doesn’t get a lot of credit for that.”

Bush said it was “kind of obvious” that Tom Brady was targeting Godwin on the play.

“I knew it was some type of crossing route,” Bush said, “so we took away his first read and after that it was just read and react.”

Bush had five tackles (four solo) in the game, giving him 35 (22 solo) through six games this season, after which he will be a free agent following the Steelers’ decision to decline a fifth-year option on the former No. 10 overall draft pick. Bush has been splitting time with Myles Jack and Robert Spillane as Steelers’ inside linebackers.

“Man, that’s my guy,” Jack said of Bush. “He was just doing what he does.”
