Steve Mears, Bob Errey will not return to Penguins broadcasts on SportsNet Pittsburgh
The new era of Pittsburgh Penguins television broadcasts that’s set to begin Oct. 2, when AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh transitions into SportsNet Pittsburgh (SNP), will have reverberations felt in the broadcast booth.
AT&T SportsNet play-by-play announcer Steve Mears and longtime color commentator Bob Errey will not return this season, a source confirmed to the Tribune-Review on Friday.

Rinkside reporter Dan Potash has been retained by SportsNet Pittsburgh and will remain part of the broadcast team.
Earlier this week, Penguins owner Fenway Sports Group revealed it was purchasing AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh from Warner Bros. Discovery. Soon after, the name change to SportsNet Pittsburgh was announced.
While daily operations of SNP will transfer to New England Sports Network (NESN), Penguins fans can expect consistency with regards to the club’s current presence on cable TV, which will not change.
The fates of the many behind-the-scenes professionals, such as producers, camera operators or audio technicians, have not been decided.
Uncertainty also surrounds prospective replacements for Mears and Errey, although Penguins Radio Network play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff would be a logical option.
Errey played in the NHL from 1983-99. A member of the Penguins from 1983-93, he won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships with the club in 1991 and 1992. Errey began work as television color commentator for the Penguins in 2004.
Mears has served as the Penguins’ television play-by-play announcer since spring 2017.
