Stimmel, Goetz lead 7 Western Pa. golfers into state match play final 16
Rick Stimmel had it going during the qualifying round of the R. Jay Sigel State Amateur on Monday.
The Pittsburgh native bogeyed his third hole of the day, No. 12, and then he got hot.
Change that to sizzling.
He birdied seven of 12 holes and then eagled No. 9, his final hole of the round, to shoot a 29 on the front nine and finish as medalist with an 8-under par 64 at the County Club of York.
Greensburg native Mark Goetz was a shot back at 7-under par 65, and Fox Chapel’s Gregor Meyer, who won the Westmoreland County Amateur on Sunday, was tied for third at 5-under 67.
Pittsburgh’s Nathan Smith was tied for fifth after shooting a 4-under 68, and Upper St. Clair’s Louis Olsakovsky, Nemacolin Country Club’s Brett Young and Indiana’s Kyle Grube were tied for ninth at 3-under.
The top 16 advanced to Tuesday’s match play first round.
Here are Tuesday’s pairings:

Michael Brown Jr. vs. Max Siegfried
Tug Maude vs. Kyle Grube
