Super Bowl-winning former Steelers assistant Tom Moore gets honor from Hall of Fame
At no one place did Tom Moore spend more time as a coach than with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And for a career that spans more than six decades – and counting – Moore has been selected for a special honor by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Moore, a former Steelers offensive coordinator who won two Super Bowl rings with the organization, will be honored as a recipient of an “Awards of Excellence” by the Hall of Fame, it was announced Thursday.
Moore, at 84 years old last month, signed on for 2023 to remain on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive staff. That will be his 46th season of a career coaching in the NFL that began when he was hired by Chuck Noll to serve as the wide receivers coach of the Steelers in 1977.
Moore served in that role through Super Bowl victories after the 1978 and 1979 seasons and through 1982, when he was promoted to offensive coordinator.
Upon leaving the Steelers after the 1989 season, Moore went on to stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals and Bucs. Most notable was 11 years (plus two more with a different title) as the offensive coordinator of the Peyton Manning-led Colts.
A quarterback in college at Iowa, Moore also coached at five colleges and in the World Football League at the beginning of a coaching career that began in 1961 at his alma mater.
Already a member of the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Moore is one of 17 given “Awards of Excellence” by the Hall of Fame in 2023. The special category was created last year by the Hall of Fame to honor individuals who likely would never earn induction into the Hall of Fame because their roles were as assistant coaches, athletic trainers, equipment managers, film/video directors or public relations personnel.
