Derry native Scott Wisneski is the new men’s volleyball coach at Saint Vincent.

Saint Vincent has a coach for its newest varsity sport.

The school added men’s volleyball, its 24th sport, and on Tuesday announced Derry native Scott Wisneski will lead the first-year program, which is expected to begin play for the 2019-20 season.

Wisneski was an assistant for the Bearcats women’s volleyball team since 2004.

“I am excited to have this opportunity to build a program at Saint Vincent,” Wisneski said in a news release. “This is a very strong area for high school boys volleyball, and it’s a perfect fit for Saint Vincent to add the sport. We have a longstanding tradition of fielding very strong women’s volleyball teams, and we will now have a chance to expand our volleyball family to include a men’s team.”

Wisneski won two state titles as a player at Derry and went on to coach the Latrobe boys team, as well as coaching stints at the Junior Olympic level and with the Foothills Volleyball Club.

“Back when I played, there wasn’t a lot of opportunity to play in high school, let alone continue your career at the collegiate level in this area,” Wisneski said. “Today, there are some very good players and teams in Western Pennsylvania. I hope to give many of these quality players an opportunity to have the chance I never did, to continue their careers here at Saint Vincent.”
