It’s a 3-on-3 tournament with 14-minute periods and no power plays. But the organization is doing its best to get the competitive juices flowing.

The annual capper to the Pittsburgh Penguins development camp is game play at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. To spice things up, the Penguins award a trophy – the Michel Briere Cup – complete with engraved names of the winners on it. It’s been awarded since 2016.

While last season the teams were named after development camp alumni who would go on to claim the Stanley Cup (Matt Murray, Jake Guentzel, Brian Dumoulin and Olli Maatta), this season the Penguins are going with current or future Hall of Famers.

The 41 players were split into four teams named after franchise icons Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

Development camp will conclude tonight with a 3-on-3 tournament at #UPMC66! The puck drops at 7:00PM.

Among the highest-profile players in the camp, 2019 first-round pick Samuel Poulin and newly-signed Finnish goalie Emil Larmi are on Team Jagr, second-round pick Nathan Legare was assigned to Team Lemieux and last year’s top pick, defenseman Calen Addison, is on Team Malkin.

Austin Lemieux was not assigned to the team named after his father but instead to one named in honor or his former houseman. Lemieux will play for Team Crosby.

Player development coach Tom Kostopoulos, director of player development Scott Young, special assignment scout Kevin Stevens and St. Cloud State coach Brett Larson will serve as coached the teams, which each have 5-6 forwards and 3-4 defensemen. Team Crosby is the only team with an extra goalie.

The game will faceoff at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.
