Penguins no strangers when it comes to playing overseas
On Tuesday, the NHL announced the Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators would be playing a pair of games in Sweden next season.
The contests will take place Nov. 14 and 16 at the Avicii Arena in Stockholm.
This will mark the second time the Penguins have played games in Sweden and the second occasion they have faced the Predators on a continent other than North America.
A brief look at the Penguins’ previous adventures overseas.
2008 — Sweden
The defending Eastern Conference champion Penguins opened the 2008-09 in Sweden at what was formerly known as the Stockholm Globe Arena.
Their season opener was a 4-3 overtime win against the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 4. Forward Tyler Kennedy scored two goals, including the game-winner.
Also finding the net for the Penguins was forward Evgeni Malkin who scored the first of his four career short-handed goals as well as defenseman Rob Scuderi. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury made 32 saves on 35 shots in the victory.
Current Penguins assistant general manager Jason Spezza, operating as a forward for the Senators, scored a short-handed goal as well.
Two days later, at the same venue, the Senators claimed a 3-1 win thanks to a pair of goals by forward Dany Heatley.
Defenseman Alex Goligoski scored the Penguins’ lone goal while Fleury finished with 24 saves on 27 shots.
2000 — Japan
Roughly two years after the success of having NHLers participate in the 1998 Winter Olympics that were staged in Nagano, Japan, the league opted to have the Penguins open the 2000-01 season with a pair of games against the Predators at the Yoyogi Arena in Tokyo.
The Predators won the first contest, 3-1, on Oct. 6 thanks to forwards Scott Walker and Vitali Yachmenev each recording a goal and an assist.
Forward Jan Hrdina scored the Penguins’ lone goal while goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin made 30 saves on 32 shots in the defeat.
The next day, a trio of Czech forwards — Robert Lang, Martin Straka and Hrdina — all scored goals for the Penguins in a 3-1 victory.
Forward Jaromir Jagr recorded two assists for the Penguins while Aubin stopped 21 of 22 shots.
