It was met with great fanfare and well received when Pitt went back to the Script five years ago.

Now, the Pittsburgh Pirates are doing the same.

The Pirates unveiled updated road jerseys Friday, and the new aspect is actually an old one. The word “Pittsburgh” across the chest of the jerseys will be written in cursive, a la how it was done for the team between 1990-2000.

Josh Bell and Joe Musgrove modeled the new look for reporters in the Pirates clubhouse at PNC Park on Friday afternoon. Musgrove wore the gray traditional jersey and Bell was in a black “alternate.”

The first three seasons of the Pirates “script,” they won the National League East — those remain the franchise’s most recent division titles.

“The thing about (the script) is that (era) is, like, in my sweet spot,” said new manager Derek Shelton, who is 49. “The height of those games. That’s when those jerseys were being worn when I was in college. So, yeah, I’m digging them. Someone told me they like the gray ones. I like the black a lot. I think the black ones look sweet.”

For the past 19 seasons, the “Pittsburgh” on road jerseys was in a stylized block font and capitalized. The move away from the script came when the team moved into PNC Park.

This time, the font change coincides with a new manager and new general manager.

“Having a new logo to go with our new mentality and our new edge and new culture in this clubhouse is cool,” Musgrove said.
