Coming into Pittsburgh Steelers training camp, not many starting positions were up for grabs. Right tackle is the only obvious one, though inside linebacker needs sorting out, too.

Receiver roles need defined, but unlike offensive tackle, being designated “starter” does not guarantee a majority of snaps, similar to how being a second-teamer doesn’t keep a player on the bench.

In any event, although it’s still remarkably early in camp at Saint Vincent, four practice sessions is enough time to allow the Steelers’ depth chart to begin to take shape.

Here is how it looks heading into Tuesday’s day off, based on observations from the Trib.

Breaking it down:

  • This was compiled on an individual-position basis; meaning, for example, B.J. Finney is listed as the second-team center, left guard and right guard. This paints a more accurate picture at each position than simply listing the order of practice reps through four sessions, in which Finney played mostly center.
  • It’s not a perfect exercise. For example, JuJu Smith-Schuster is more often than not the first-team slot receiver when the Steelers use a three-WR set. But he’s also the top outside option when there are only two receivers on the field. For first team, the decision was made to list each player at one spot.
  • Inside linebacker is an isolated position because three players are sharing two starting spots almost equally to this point.
  • Defensive line also is tricky because the base and nickel defenses skew who plays where. The overall depth chart reflects this the best it can.
  • T.J. Watt remains on the physically unable to perform list and has not practiced. But as a returning Pro Bowl honoree, his spot as the starting left outside linebacker is secure.
