Pittsburgh Penguins center Sam Lafferty, center, celebrates with defenseman Brian Dumoulin and winger Jared McCann after scoring an empty-net goal during the third period of the team’s NHL hockey game against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, in St. Paul, Minn. The Penguins won 7-4.

You know what Penguins rookie Sam Lafferty needs? A fun nickname.

Like, for instance, if anyone had ever called him something like “Duck” before, this kid would be running Pittsburgh by now.

The Hollidaysburg native has five points in his last two games and the Penguins have won their last three matchups.

He’s not the only one to step up for the Penguins since being recalled from Wilkes-Barre during the rash of injuries suffered by the team this month.

Adam Johnson and Joseph Blandisi have also pushed the puck into the net. Now the Penguins depth gets tested again on Wednesday against the unbeaten Colorado Avalanche at PPG Paints Arena.

The Avs have won all five games they have played so far, including a 6-3 win over the Washington Capitals Monday night.

Brian Metzer of the Penguins Radio Network joins me for our weekly hockey chat. We dive into that matchup, how the Penguins are managing to win and score a lot despite the loss of Evgeni Malkin and a host of other forwards, and whether or not it can continue when those guys return.

Oh, and why every Tool fan hates us now.
