Pirates left fielder Miguel Andujar drives in a run with a double during the first inning against the Reds on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022, at PNC Park.

With a glut of outfielders and after signing Andrew McCutchen to a one-year, $5 million contract Friday, the Pittsburgh Pirates designated Miguel Andujar for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Andujar batted .250 (9 for 36) with three doubles, a triple and nine RBIs in nine games for the Pirates last season after being claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees.

The Pirates avoided arbitration with Andujar on Nov. 18 by signing him to a one-year deal worth $1.525 million. With eight outfielders on the 40-man roster and the addition of McCutchen, who can play outfield and serve as designated hitter, Andujar became expendable.

Andujar, 27, has a career .272/.302/.447 slash line with 58 doubles, 35 home runs and 131 RBIs in 268 games over six seasons with the New York Yankees. He hit .297 with 47 doubles, 27 home runs and 92 RBIs as a rookie in 2018 but hasn’t come close to duplicating those numbers.
