Tri-State PGA ready to return June 3
After a delay of more than two months, local professional and amateur golfers will be able to compete in various tournaments in the area beginning in June.
The Tri-State PGA finalized its updated schedule Thursday, and the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association will be releasing its updated schedule Monday morning.
The Tri-State’s first event will be the Head Professional Championship at Wildwood Golf Club on June 3. That will be followed by the Golf Galaxy Open at Connoquenessing Country Club on June 8.
Both are limited to local professionals.
The Tri-State Open will be held on June 15-16 at Williams Golf and Country Club in Weirton, W.Va.
“We lost a few tournaments,” Tri-State PGA Executive Director Dave Wright said. “We’ve rescheduled most of them. We’re playing into October and even have an event scheduled when we return home from Las Vegas.”
A few changes include a cup lifter to retrieve the ball from the cup and electronic scoring. Each golfer will receive a lightweight rake to carry if they hit from a sand trap.
“We want to keep the bunkers in play and keep it as close as we can to the rules of golf,” Wright said. “We’re following all the CDC guidelines.”
The first Isaly’s Junior event is scheduled for June 15 at Westmoreland Country Club. There are 15 Isaly’s events scheduled.
West Penn Golf Association Executive Director Terry Teasdale said a lot of events have been changed and rescheduled. He said the schedule will be ready for release Monday.
“We won’t be starting any earlier than June 15,” Teasdale said.
Also scheduled for this summer is the annual Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational, which will take place June 29 thru July 1 at the Pittsburgh Field Club.
The projected field includes amateur Palmer Jackson, Jimmy Meyers, Erik Edwards, Austin Lemieux and Jack Katarincic and up-and-coming mini-tour players Steve Wheatcroft, Michael Van Sickle, Dan Obremski, Dan McCarthy, T.J. Howe, Spencer Mellon, Tom Nettles, Easton Renwick, David Bradshaw and former Chicago Blackhawk Jeremy Roenick.
Returning champion Matt Gligic defeated Wheatcroft and Ryan Lenahan in eight extra holes to win the event last year. Bradshaw, a three-time champion and two-time runner-up, was the 54-hole leader but stumbled during the final round.
