Thursday marks the debut post at TribLive for “TV Talk” columnist Rob Owen.

During his 22 years covering the television and media scene in Pittsburgh, Owen was a frequent guest of mine on radio. And he makes our “Breakfast With Benz” podcast debut here today to talk about his new column with TribLive and lots of television-related matters.

As the networks scramble to figure out ways to produce new content during the coronavirus era, some new reality shows are launching with a Pittsburgh connection. Those include some rumors of “The Bachelor” being filmed at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.

Owen tells us if that really has a chance to happen.

We also get into some sports-related matters. Specifically, how some mixed play-by-play ratings are being interpreted across the industry. There had been hope that a return of live sports would add some real zip to television ratings.

That hasn’t necessarily been the case. The numbers have been scattered. Owen explains why.

That being said, the networks sure would love to have sports back. Particularly college football. If that sport doesn’t happen, though, can the NFL save the day by spreading out to Saturdays?

The new “Monday Night Football” crew is Steve Levy doing play-by-play with Louis Riddick and Brian Griese. That group could be described two different ways.

Supporters of that hire call it football-centric, meat and potatoes, and educated. Critics call it boring, conservative, middle of the road, and basic. Owen tells us what ESPN was likely trying to accomplish.

We also delve into some of the “cancel culture” fallout of TV sports in recent weeks. Specifically, the dismissals of Cincinnati Reds play-by-play man Thom Brennaman and NBC hockey color commentator Mike Milbury.

Were the networks really afraid of negative backlash ratings-wise for keeping these broadcasters in place? Or are they more worried about fallout in terms of optics and advertisers?

Lastly, we follow up on the “Ultimate Tag” show that features Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt and his brothers. Covid-19 may be a challenge when it comes to renewing that show. Ratings may be as well.

Don’t forget to read Owen’s work this morning and his first Q&A Friday.
