Trinity's Mary Dunn to coach in Mid-American Conference
It’s a Dunn deal.
Once a dominating presence around the rim and a now budding college coach, Mary Dunn will soon be teaching her post-up moves to players at Kent State.
Dunn, a Trinity graduate, is joining the women’s basketball staff there after two seasons as an assistant at Alabama Birmingham.
The 6-foot-3 Dunn played at Youngstown State for five years before completing her college career at Pitt.
She also played professionally briefly for the Brunell Basketball Club of the Irish Super League. She averaged 10 points and 14 rebounds a game in 2022-23.
“Her experience, both as a student-athlete and coach, at the Division I level will greatly benefit our player development moving forward,” Kent State coach Todd Starkey said. “As a Western Pennsylvania native, Mary will help continue our success in recruiting that area. She also brings a lot of energy and is great fit for our (Kent State) family.”
Dunn joined the UAB staff as a graduate assistant in 2023-24 before she took over as assistant coach/director of operations for 2024-25.
UAB made the WNIT in both seasons.
As a college player, Dunn scored 1,299 points and grabbed 540 rebounds in 114 games. She shot over 50% from the field.
She made the All-Horizon League first team and was the Sixth Player of the Year in 2018-19, and Horizon League Freshman of the Year in 2016-17.
She played 24 games and made four starts at Pitt in 2021-22.
Dunn has a bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State, where she double-majored in communications and sociology and boasted a 4.0 grade-point average. She earned a master’s degree in professional communication in 2021.
