Goaltender Tristan Jarry made 32 saves on 34 shots for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 3-1 road loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday at the KeyBank Center.

The Sabres took the contest’s first lead 12 minutes, 14 seconds into the second period. From above the left circle of the offensive zone, Sabres forward Dylan Cozens accepted a pass then slipped the puck to the right circle where forward Victor Olofsson cranked a one-timer past Jarry’s glove hand on the near side for his first goal this preseason. Cozens and forward Peyton Krebs had assists.

It became a 2-0 score late in the middle frame at the 18:22 mark. After Sabres defenseman Chase Priskie forced a turnover at the center red line near the benches, Sabres forward Tage Thompson claimed possession. Maneuvering past aggressive Penguins defenseman Ty Smith, Thompson motored up the right wing into the offensive zone and sniped a rising wrister from the right circle past Jarry’s right shoulder on the far side for his first goal. Priskie had the lone assist.

The Penguins’ goal came at 18:24 of the final period with Jarry pulled for an extra attacker. From the Sabres’ left circle, Penguins forward Valtteri Puustinen chopped a slapper on net that was booted out by goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. The rebound caromed to the right of the crease, where Penguins forward Drake Caggiula corralled it and lifted a backhander past Luukkonen’s glove for his first goal. Puustinen and forward Kasperi Kapanen collected assists.

An empty-net score by forward Jack Quinn, his second of the preseason, capped the scoring at 19:37 of the third. Assists went to Thompson and Olofsson.

Luukkonen made 32 saves on 33 shots to record the victory.

The Penguins’ next game of the preseason is a road contest against the Detroit Red Wings on Monday.
