A right foot injury has sidelined goaltender Tristan Jarry since April 14.

NEW YORK — Injured Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry and forward Rickard Rakell participated in an optional morning skate Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

Neither is expected to participate in Game 5 of their team’s first-round playoff series against the New York Rangers. The Penguins lead the best-of-seven series 3-1.

Sidelined since suffering a right foot injury April 14, Jarry took shots from teammates during the optional skate.

“They’re just continuing to make progress,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “Tristan had his longest workout. I think he made a big jump today just as far as his progression and his return to play (process). (Rakell), the same thing. He’s doing well. Their status hasn’t changed. They’re still day to day at this point. But they’re making progress.”

Rakell has not played since suffering a presumed head injury in Game 1 of the series May 3.

Notes:

• Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin was not present for the optional morning skate. Hobbled by an undisclosed injury that he suffered in Game 1, Dumoulin has not been on the ice since he participated in an optional morning skate prior to Game 2 at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.

Sullivan indicated he “is progressing off the ice.”

• Penguins forward Jason Zucker did not participate in Thursday’s optional skate or Wednesday’s practice in Cranberry. Hobbled throughout the season because of various injuries, Zucker was deemed “fine” Wednesday by Sullivan.

• In addition to Jarry and Rakell, those who participated in the optional morning skate included defensemen Nathan Beaulieu, Mark Friedman, Marcus Pettersson, Chad Ruhwedel, forwards Jeff Carter, Evgeni Malkin, Drew O’Connor and goaltender Alex D’Orio.

• The Rangers did not stage a morning skate.

Follow the Penguins all season long.
