At a meeting involving its delegates Monday evening, the Twi-Night Trap League decided to cancel the 2020 competition season.

The league said concerns over the health of all of its members during this time of the coronavirus pandemic was the main reason for the shutdown.

Rowland Jones, secretary and treasurer for the league, said the league could not safely, and within guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control, sign people up, handle money and take care of all the other work needed to run the league.

“With everything we were looking at, and all the restrictions, we just couldn’t have the trap league this year,” Jones said.

Close to 250 people were ready to compete on the league’s five club teams — Connellsville, East Huntingdon, Ruffsdale, Youngwood and Hecla.

The league was to begin March 26 and hold rotations each Thursday through September. However, league officials decided to postpone the first round of five trap shooting competitions as the initial covid-19 restrictions were put in place.

The second round, set to begin April 30, also was postponed as the league held out hope for June 4 as a possible start date.

The league, a tradition in the area for more than 60 years, held 25 weeks of competitions last year and concluded with a postseason shoot at East Huntingdon.

Connellsville entered this season as the defending league champion.

Jones said plans will begin soon to get the league ready for 2021 with shooing dates and the rotation of the clubs. He said the league officers in place for the 2020 season will remain the same heading into next year.
