U mad, bro?: Some Steelers fans are over Aaron Rodgers to Pittsburgh talk. Others turn negative about — negativity?
Some Pittsburgh Steelers fans are angry that the team doesn’t have a plan for an instant fix at quarterback after Ben Roethlisberger retires.
Others are mad that we are even talking about plans for an instant fix at quarterback once Roethlisberger retires.
Yeah. That sounds about right.
Also, I get a lot of negativity from readers … about my negativity.
That sounds about right, too.
All that in this week’s “U mad, bro?”
This anonymous emailer thinks I should stop writing about the idea of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers coming to Pittsburgh via trade next year.
“Aaron Rodgers is 38 in December. Such a trade would be almost as stupid as writing about it like it might actually happen.”
I suppose you are right. Because Tom Brady and Peyton Manning never did anything worthwhile at 38 or older.
And the last time Aaron Rodgers was the MVP was so long ago. I mean, like, almost eight whole months.
Good call.
I’m with you. The Steelers should use good ol’ conventional thinking and just hand the ball to Mason Rudolph or Dwayne Haskins next year. Either that or take one of the many — um — “superb” NFL draft prospects at quarterback in this year’s class that will be growing on trees in 2022.
Looks like you burned me on this one.
Steve sent an email regarding the Jay Glazer report that Mike Tomlin doesn’t want to start a rookie quarterback after Roethlisberger leaves. Which is why he seems to think Rodgers might be in play for the Steelers this offseason.
“If this doesn’t sound like a slam dunk reason to dump Tomlin when Ben is out, I don’t know what is.
Sounds good to me. Draft a new QB. Hire a new head coach. Out with the old, in with the new, right?
Of course the delusional (Art) Rooney II will probably look at all the previous seasons the Steelers were so successful rolling out retreads, backups, and has beens at QB under Noll and Cowher, and think things will be just fine milking the Tomlin era for another 5-10 years without drafting another franchise QB again.
I mean, it’s what fans come to the games for — seeing the same head coach, season after season, accomplishing nothing.
On the brightside, at least I’ll know my Sundays will be free for the next however many years, just like they were for much of the 80’s.”
Well, no. Drafting a quarterback from this crummy draft class doesn’t sound good. And I’m not so wild about the prospect of the team marrying itself to either Rudolph or Haskins.
To use your 1980s analogy, that sounds very Cliff Stoudt-ish and Mark Malone-esque to me.
That’s why I think taking a swing at Rodgers or another big name veteran might be worth it, unless you can be patient through at least a year of uncertainty until perhaps a better QB draft class becomes available.
Personally, I didn’t free up my Sundays in the 80s. I suffered through those games as a fan. That made the improvements of the 90s mean so much more. And the near misses of the 90s made the results of the 2000s Super Bowl wins even better.
So, on the baseball front, think about how hard I’m going to party when the Pirates make the baseball postseason again in 2042.
This guy lashed out at me because I was hard on the Steelers after they lost to the Packers for a third consecutive defeat.
Gee. An anti-Steelers article from Tim Benz. Imagine that.

Gee, a Steelers fan boy who can’t handle criticism after his team dropped to 1-3. Imagine that.
Robert shares that opinion about me. The subject of his email was “POOR WRITING”.
“Are you always so negative?”
Yes, Robert. If the Steelers lose, I tend to be negative.
If the Steelers lose, and I pretend to celebrate about how happy I am, I somehow think that will come off looking even worse. Don’t you think?
I love how you call it “poor writing” just because you disagree with the tone, topic or opinion. Or maybe you just don’t want to hear the truth.
That doesn’t make the writing “poor.” It just makes the reader a baby if he/she can’t handle it.
The local baseball team lost 101 games. The local hockey team hasn’t won a playoff series since 2018. And the football team was in the middle of a three game losing streak when you sent this.
Did you want me to write about all the good times lately? It would’ve made for a short column.
Finally, Marc doesn’t like the “Seinfeld” homage as the title for my weekly “Feats of Strength/Airing of Grievances” column to recap Steeler games.
“You know Seinfeld went off the air 20 years ago, boss?”
The Steelers’ last Super Bowl win was 13 years ago. Should I stop referencing that, too … boss?
Oops. Sorry. That probably came off as negative, didn’t it?
