Scottie Scheffler tees off on the first tee during the first round of the U.S. Open on Thursday, June 12, 2025 at Oakmont Country Club.

Plenty of excitement is expected Friday during Round 2 of the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club as players look to make the cut and play this weekend. Here’s a look at some highlights from Friday’s action:

8:20 p.m.

The second round of the U.S. Open has been suspended because of “dangerous weather,” according to the USGA. Thirteen players remained on the course.

6:50 p.m.

Rory McIlroy was spotted on camera tossing an iron after a wayward approach shot earlier this afternoon. His anger again got the best of him on the No. 17 tee box. He actually took his anger out on the tee marker. He is 3-over today and 7-over for the tournament, which is right at the cut line.

6:30 p.m.

There’s a good chance Sam Burns, who teed off way back at 7:29 a.m., will be the solo leader after two rounds of the U.S. Open at 3-under. First-round leader J.J. Spaun made bogey on the 18th hole to wrap up his round at 2-under.

Viktor Hovland, who teed off at 7:40 a.m., is in the clubhouse at 1-under. Among players still on the course, Thriston Lawrence is at 1-under and Adam Scott and Ben Griffin are even par.

6:10 p.m.

The projected cut line has held steady at 7-over all day. Among the players on the good side of the cut line at the moment are Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed at 7-over. Among the players on the bad side are Ludvig Aberg and Hideki Matsuyama at 8-over and Bryson DeChambeau at 9-over.

6:05 p.m.

After starting his round with a double bogey on No. 10, Belgian Thomas Detry has been on a steady climb. He reached the 626-yard par-5 fourth hole in two shots, two-putted for birdie and is now tied with J.J. Spaun and Sam Burns atop the leaderboard at 3-under.

5:45 p.m.

Sam Burns hasn’t played a shot for hours, but he has moved into a tie for the lead at the U.S. Open. First-round leader J.J. Spaun bogeyed the 15th hole to drop back to 3-under for the tournament, matching Burns.

5 p.m.

J.J. Spaun is doggedly refusing to give up the lead at Oakmont.

South African Thriston Lawrence made three straight birdies to briefly take a three-stroke lead, but Spaun kept up a steady pace. When Thriston made three straight bogies on No. 14-16, Spaun returned to the top spot on the leaderboard. He’s 4-under par. Lawrence and Sam Burns are 3-under. A total of five players are under par for the tournament.

4:10 p.m.

Thiston Lawrence’s three-stoke lead disappeared as fast as it developed. Lawrence made bogey on the par-4 14th while J.J. Spaun was making birdie in the par-4 11th. Lawrence is at 5-under and Spaun at 4-under.

3:45 p.m.

South African Thriston Lawrence made three straight birdies to take the lead at Oakmont.

After starting his round with a par on No. 10, Lawrence made a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-4 11th, chipped inside 7 feet and made the putt on the par-5 12th and made a 19-footer on the par-3 13th to move to 6-under, three ahead of J.J. Spaun and Sam Burns. Six players are currently under par for the tournament.

3:30

Belgium’s Thomas Detry shot himself into contention when he holed his second shot from the fairway on the par-4 14th, his fifth hole of the day. The eagle, from 141 yards, moved Detry to 1-under for the tournament, three shots behind J.J. Spaun and Thriston Lawrence, both of whom are playing afternoon rounds.

2:55 p.m.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who shot 1-over-par in Round 2 and is 4-over for the tournament, on the pace of play at Oakmont thus far: “It felt long to me. Both the par-5s we basically walked up on the group in front of us. When it’s up on No. 8 — you’ve got a drivable par-4 on 17. (No.) 8 is basically a drivable par-4, too. You guys are the ones watching. I’m just trying to play. I’ve got too many concerns other than the pace it takes to get around this place.”

2:25 p.m.

Rory McIlroy is getting a good look at how unforgiving Oakmont has been today. McIlroy, who shot a 4-over 74 in the first round, started his second round double-par-double. He’s 8-over and in danger of missing the cut, which is currently projected at 7-over.

2:15 p.m.

First-round leader J.J. Spaun remains atop the leaderboard. With how difficult Oakmont is playing, his hold seems precarious.

Spaun missed the green with his second shot and made bogey at the par-4 third to slip into a first-place tie with Sam Burns, then reached the green in two on the par-5 fourth and two-putted for birdie to retake sole possession of the top spot.

2 p.m.

So, how is the course playing today at Oakmont Country Club?

Denny McCarthy, who shot 4-over-par in Round 2 and is tied for 36th, on the course conditions: “Gettable if you hit it in the fairway. Not gettable if you don’t hit it in the fairway.”

Added Jon Rahm, who was 5-over-par today: “Honestly, I’m too annoyed and too mad right now to think about any perspective. Very frustrated. Very few rounds of golf I played in my life where I think I hit good putts and they didn’t sniff the hole, so it’s frustrating.”

1:25 p.m.

First-round leader J.J. Spaun began his second round with a par as he attempts to hang onto the top spot at the U.S. Open. Sam Burns, who shot 5-under in the morning wave, is in the clubhouse at 3-under par. Spaun is playing No. 2 at 4-under for the tournament.

12:20 p.m.

Scottie Scheffler isn’t close to the top of the leaderboard right now, but his good friend Sam Burns is.

Heading into his final three holes of his second round, Burns is 5-under for the round and 3-under for the tournament, tied for second with Viktor Hovland, also nearing the end of his second round, and Thriston Lawrence, who tees off at 2:20 this afternoon.

12:10 p.m.

Pa. Gov. Josh Shapiro just met with the media here at Oakmont Country Club and thanked the USGA for visiting the state for a 95th time, including a 10th U.S. Open here at Oakmont.

“Let me just first say that the USGA not only knows how to put on an extraordinary tournament,” he said. “They’ve got great taste in how they chose Oakmont for the 10th time, and Pennsylvania is quite literally, I think, the golf capital of the United States, with 95 championships being here within the boundaries of our great Commonwealth.

“Golf is huge business here in Pennsylvania. It’s a great opportunity for recreation. It’s a great opportunity for business. I will also say it’s a great opportunity to find ways to bring people together in these hyper-polarized times. We’ve got to find ways to communicate and talk and work together, and that’s exactly what golf is able to do.”

11:40 a.m.

Victor Perez made a bit of history at Oakmont Country Club. Perez hit a hole-in-one on No. 6 for only the second ace in the history of U.S. Opens at Oakmont. More importantly, the feat moved the Frenchman to 1-over for the tournament.

11:30 a.m.

Daniel Berger continues to put himself in good position. Berger sank a birdie putt on No. 2 — his 11th hole of the day — to move to 1-under for the tournament. Berger is 3-under for his round. At the moment, only nine players are under par.

11:20 a.m.

Scottie Scheffler continues to have an up-and-down round. After getting a shot back with a birdie on No. 2 — his 11th hole of the day — he gave it back with a bogey on No. 3 after hitting his tee shot in to the infamous church pew bunkers.

Viktor Hovland, meanwhile, also dropped back. After playing his first 10 holes at 4-under, Hovland took a double-bogey 6 on No. 2.

10:45 a.m.

Betting favorite Scottie Scheffler isn’t showing signs of running away with the U.S. Open. Far from it.

After driving the par-4 17th, Scheffler took a four-putt bogey to drop to 4-over for the tournament. After a par on No. 18 — his ninth hole of the day — he took another bogey on No. 1 to drop to 5-over.

10 a.m.

Victor Hovland vaulted himself into a tie for second after an eagle on the par 4 17th hole. His tee shot ran just off the back left of the green and he chipped in for the eagle.

9:55 a.m.

The USGA offered its Round 2 setup information.

Putting green speed – Putting green speeds ranged from the upper 14s to the low 15s on the Stimpmeter and will settle to the upper 14s as the day goes on. Groundskeepers double cut and double rolled all greens this morning.

Today’s yardage:

Front 9 - 3,798

Back 9 - 3,584

Total - 7,382

• No alternate tees were used in Round 2

• Hole 17 measures just 296 yards as a par 4 today from tee-markers to the hole

• Rough was not cut last night

9:30 a.m.

Justin Thomas dealt with a couple … or four … trick putts on the 12th green early Friday morning in Round 2. He ended up with a four-putt for a double bogey and fell back to 9-over-par.

Just seven players are currently under par for the tournament, and five of them have yet to tee off.

7:40 a.m.

Some of the featured groups are on the course and getting a taste of Oakmont right away. Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm and Dustin Johnson all missed the fairway off the first tee, landed in bunkers and were forced to lay up short of the green with their approach.

Playing with Justin Thomas and Min Woo Lee, Brooks Koepka, who started the day at 2-under par and in third place, bogeyed his first hole at No. 10 after three-putting.
