Unfiltered: Tim Benz and Mark Madden discuss Penguins’ humiliating loss to Canadiens in the playoffs
Tim Benz and Mark Madden return for this week’s edition of “Unfiltered” on TribLive’s Facebook page to the discuss the Penguins humiliating loss to the Montreal Canadiens to be bounced from the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The guys have had a few days to contemplate the game, but they still feel the same - it was a complete failure.
Madden says the most shocking part of the loss is what a terrible job head coach Mike Sullivan did, calling it his low point as a Penguins coach.
Madden questions the power play, playing Patrick Marleau, the pairing of Jack Johnson and Justin Schultz, and says Tristan Jarry should have been in net to start the series.
Madden says Sullivan made so many mistakes it’s hard to keep track of them all. He doesn’t think the coach will lose if job during the off-season, but if the Penguins start slow next season, he should be on the hot seat.
The blame for the loss also falls on Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, Madden says. And the team can not return with the core of Crosby, Malkin and Kris Letang. There needs to be a change, according to Madden.
Benz agrees that if there is going to be a rebuild, there needs to be a big move, like replacing the coach or trading one of the core players.
The guys talk also about Jarry likely becoming the teams top goalie and Matt Murray likely heading out.
Madden and Benz also talk about Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford and what he might do.
The guys discuss the possibility of the Philadelphia Flyers winning the Stanley Cup this season; the Pirates continuing to find creative ways to lose; college players opting out of their football seasons and the impact on the NFL draft; and college football looking like the season will not be players. The guys think that the NFL will play though, regardless of the coronavirus pandemic. And respond to some reader comments.
