Unfiltered: Tim Benz and Mark Madden discuss what getting Jeff Carter means for Penguins
Tim Benz and Mark Madden return for this week’s edition of “Unfiltered” on TribLive’s Facebook page to talk about the Pittsburgh Penguins acquiring forward Jeff Carter and how he will fit in with the team. The guys also talk about the Steelers and the upcoming NFL draft, the Pirates’ recent play and more.
Madden says that he doesn’t hate the trade for Carter, but he doesn’t understand how a team lacking in many draft picks gives up a 3rd- and 4th-round pick for a 36-year-old player.
Madden wonders if this trade says something about when Evgeni Malkin will be back and how good he will be when he gets back.
Madden also wonders about how the team sees itself. Are the Penguins a real Stanley Cup contender? If they think they are close, is Carter the guy that will put them over the top?
“It’s not a deal that outrages me,” says Madden. “It’s just not a deal that answers many questions.”
Benz thinks Carter is not a guy who can put the team over the top, but rather a guy who can keep the team afloat if more injuries arise.
The guys also wonder: Is Carter is another version of Patrick Marleau?
They also talk about what the Steelers might do in the NFL draft. Benz says that if the draft is so top-heavy with quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends, will an offensive line player be available for the Steelers to pick? If someone that they weren’t thinking about is available would they select him, or are the other holes on defense too big to overlook?
Madden and Benz also get into more Steelers talk, Joe Musgrove’s no-hitter and WrestleMania, and answer viewers comments and questions.
