Upper St. Clair's Doug Whaley, 2 others, interview for Steelers' GM position
In addition to being active in free agency, the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to be busy interviewing candidates for the general manager position that Kevin Colbert will vacate after the NFL Draft.
The Steelers announced Saturday that they interviewed three additional candidates in the past week: Jerry Reese, Rick Spielman and former Steelers executive Doug Whaley. All three candidates served as NFL general managers in the past and currently aren’t attached to any organization.
That makes 16 candidates who have interviewed for the job, including internal candidates Brandon Hunt and Omar Khan.
Reese, 58, was general manager of the New York Giants from 2007 until 2017 and helped build two Super Bowl championship teams. He spent 23 years in that organization’s front office.
Spielman, 59, was general manager of the Minnesota Vikings from 2012 until he was fired Jan. 10. He has worked in NFL front offices since 1990 and also is a former general manager of the Miami Dolphins.
Whaley, 49, is an Upper St. Clair native and former Pitt player. He spent 10 seasons with the Steelers serving as the team’s pro personnel coordinator, and he was hired as the Buffalo Bills assistant general manager in 2010. Whaley elevated to the role of Buffalo’s general manager in 2013 and held that role until he was fired after the 2017 NFL Draft.
