Waynesburg lacrosse snaps losing streak that spanned 3 seasons

Waynesburg had been waiting a long time to experience the thrill of victory again.

The women’s lacrosse team finally broke through and did so Sunday when it scored a 7-5 victory at Thomas More to snap a 45-game losing streak that dated to 2016.

Not a bad way to open a new season under rookie head coach Gennaro Bonaventura.

Freshman Eve O’Sullivan, a Latrobe graduate, and junior Bre Martini each scored three goals for the Yellow Jackets (1-0), who had not win since April 20, 2016, 18-8 at Thiel.

Sophomore Kristen Byler scored early in the second half and about one minute later, O’Sullivan split the pipes to extend the lead to 5-3 with 20 minutes, 43 seconds to play.

Thomas More tied it again before Martini found the back of the net two more times to put Waynesburg ahead to stay.

Senior Christina Golonka had four ground balls and Martini added five draw controls.

Junior goalkeeper Riley Yoder made nine saves for the Yellowjackets, who also ended a 22-game skid on the road,
