The incentive to play sports at Westmoreland County Community College in the past was minimal.
Play on a team for a year or two and maybe earn credits for a future transfer to a four-year college.
But things are changing in Youngwood.
WCCC announced it will be joining National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II, which will allow it to offer scholarships beginning in the fall of 2023.
Student-athletes will be able to earn athletic money while earning their degree.
“This gives us an opportunity to create excitement for local student-athletes to look at the (junior college) route to continue their academic as well college athletic careers,” WCCA athletic director and baseball coach Mike Draghi said. “Another byproduct of JUCO athletics is the opportunity for student-athletes to gain valuable, high-level college playing experience as a freshman. We’re very excited, for sure.”
NJCAA Division II schools can give out athletic scholarships for tuition, books, fees and and up to $500 in supplies. Each sport will have limitations, as is the case at NCAA Division I and II programs.
“Westmoreland athletics provide opportunities for students to enhance their overall college experience,” WCCC president Dr. Tuesday Stanley said, “by encouraging lifelong wellness, sportsmanship and academic success.”
WCCC offers baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, golf and soccer for men, while women’s sports include basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, soccer, softball and volleyball.
The Wolfpack competes in NJCAA Region 20.
