Weekend College Top 10: Carnegie Mellon women's soccer makes history
Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:
1. Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer reaches D-III Final Four
The No. 25 Tartans defeated No. 19 St. Thomas (Minn.) on penalty kicks Saturday, becoming the first women’s team to reach the NCAA Tournament semifinals. Next up is a game against No. 1 Messiah (21-1-2) at 11 a.m. Friday in Greensboro, N.C.

Neither team scored in regulation Saturday, and Carnegie Mellon (14-5-2) won the shootout 6-5 on a goal by freshman Alex Adams.
Carolyn Botz played goalkeeper for CMU in the shootout and made a save after Adams scored to clinch the victory.
Andrea Sipos finished with 11 saves in regulation and overtime for the Tartans.

2. No. 12 Pitt wrestling slips past No. 7 Lehigh
Ninth-ranked Demetrius Thomas knocked off sixth-ranked Jordan Wood, 10-6, at 285 pounds to tie the score, and the Panthers prevailed 19-18 on the third criteria (match points) on Sunday.
Fourth-ranked Micky Phillippi (133) of Derry, 13th-ranked Taleb Rahmani (157), 12th-ranked Jake Wentzel (165) of South Park and eighth-ranked Nino Bonaccorsi (184) of Bethel Park also earned wins for the Panthers (2-1).

3. Wins keep coming for No. 2 Pitt volleyball
Kayla Lund recorded 18 kills as the Panthers swept N.C. State on Sunday to finish the regular season 11-0 on the road.

Stephanie Williams contributed 10 kills for Pitt (28-1, 17-0 ACC), which hosts Louisville on Wednesday in the regular-season finale.

4. Robert Morris football caps bounceback season with win
Nick Bisceglia (Kiski Area) made three field goals and recovered an onside kick as the Colonials clipped Sacred Heart, 16-14, in the Northeast Conference on Saturday.
Robert Morris, which went winless in the conference the past two seasons, finished 7-5, 6-1.
Picked for a 7th-place finish in the preseason poll.

Bisceglia’s 35-yarder made it 16-14 with 9 minutes, 42 seconds left to play. Sacred Heart (7-5, 4-3) missed a 39-yard field goal with 3 seconds left.
Linebacker Aniello Buzzacco had 15 tackles to up his season total to a school-record 131.

5. Grove City football ends season with wild victory
Cody Gustafson caught 13 passes for a school-record 239 yards along with three touchdowns as the Wolverines topped RPI, 41-38, in the ECAC James Lynah Bowl on Saturday. Grove City (9-2) tied its program record for wins in a season.

Josh Ehst threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns, and Wesley Schools ran for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

6. W&J football comes back for bowl victory
Delonta Nunnally returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown with 6 minutes, 42 seconds left to cap the Presidents’ rally in a 20-17 triumph over Ithaca in the ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl on Saturday.
Washington & Jefferson (8-3) trailed by 17 in the third quarter.
Presidents defensive lineman Mike Williams (Langley) was named MVP after recording 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble and his first career interception.

7. Grove City women’s basketball improves to 6-0
Sedona Campbell’s 15 points and 12 rebounds led the Wolverines past Houghton, 69-44, on Saturday as Grove City matched its best start since the 1982-83 season.
Jess Bowen (North Hills) scored 14 points, and Kate Balcom had 11 points and nine rebounds.

8. Balance fuels No. 8 IUP men’s victory
Anthony White scored 16 points, and Shawndale Jones added 13 points and 10 rebounds in the Crimson Hawks’ 80-56 rout of East Stroudsburg in the PSAC on Sunday.

Freshman Ethan Porterfield contributed a season-high 14 points for IUP (5-0), which held East Stroudsburg to 27.4% shooting from the field.

9. Seton Hill women continue unbeaten start
Tiana Stewart finished with a career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Katie Nolan contributed 19 points and 17 rebounds as the Griffins beat Bloomsburg, 90-80, on Sunday in a PSAC crossover game.
Seton Hill improved to 5-0, 2-0, and the Huskies dropped to 1-4, 0-2.

10. Allegheny women’s swimming and diving team shines
The Gators women took first at the 13-team Oberlin Invite over the weekend in Ohio for their third straight invitational win and sixth straight victory overall.
Winners included Sadie Brown in the 50 freestyle and Aimee Verardi (North Allegheny) in the 100 IM.
