Weekend College Top 10: Duquesne's Jerry Schmitt earns milestone victory

Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:

1. Schmitt becomes Dukes’ all-time winningest coach

Daniel Parr had three total touchdowns as Duquesne defeated St. Francis (Pa.), 30-21, on Saturday to give Jerry Schmitt his 98th win with the Dukes.

He passed Greg Gattuso for first in program history.

Parr threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns, and Kellon Taylor caught eight passes for a career-best 101 yards and a touchdown for the Dukes (6-2, 4-0), who have won four straight.

Duquesne held the ball for nearly 38 minutes.

St. Francis dropped to 4-5, 2-3.

2. No. 10 Slippery Rock football clinches division

Jake Chapla (Plum) kicked a 24-yard field goal as time expired, helping The Rock escape with a 31-28 victory over Cal (Pa.) on Saturday.

Slippery Rock (9-0, 6-0) locked up first place in the PSAC West.

Roland Rivers III threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns, tying The Rock’s single-season (32) and career (60) records.

Slippery Rock’s Henry Litwin caught four passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Nelson Brown ran 32 times for 137 yards and three touchdowns for Cal (6-3, 4-2).

3. No. 2 Pitt volleyball moves to 12-0 in ACC

Layne Van Buskirk’s 13 kills led the Panthers to a 25-18, 31-29, 25-10 sweep against Duke in the ACC on Sunday.

Chinaza Ndee and Stephanie Williams added 10 kills apiece for Pitt (23-1), which recorded its eighth straight sweep.

Duke fell to 11-13, 4-7.

4. Robert Morris football extends winning streak to 4

The Colonials held Long Island to 23 yards of offense in the second half en route to a 28-17 victory in the Northeast Conference on Saturday.

George Martin threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a TD for Robert Morris (5-4, 4-0), which went winless in the conference the past two seasons.

Alijah Jackson carried 15 times for 128 yards and a touchdown for the Colonials, and Matthew Gonzalez caught a 31-yard touchdown.

Robert Morris had three interceptions in the second half.

Long Island fell to 0-8, 0-7.

5. Waynesburg women, Saint Vincent men win PAC cross country titles

Waynesburg’s Aubrey Wingeart took the individual title in 22 minutes, 51.60 seconds to help the Yellowjackets claim their fourth straight conference championship Saturday. Wingeart earned PAC Runner of the Year.

Geneva, led by runner-up Elly McGillivray, placed second, and Grove City was third.

On the men’s side, Bearcats runners took the top three spots: PAC Runner of the Year Will Greene, Frankie King (Greensburg Salem) and Tyler Laughery (Norwin).

The Washington & Jefferson men placed second, and Waynesburg was third.

6. Evans, No. 19 IUP run over Seton Hill

Justin Evans (Central Catholic) ran for a personal-best 175 yards and two touchdowns as the Crimson Hawks rolled 50-23 in the PSAC on Saturday.

Evans, who averaged 15.9 yards per carry, ran for touchdowns of 52 and 27 yards for IUP (8-1, 5-1). Dom McNeil caught a 75-yard touchdown to open the scoring.

Ryan Barabe threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns, all to Kinan Humphrey, who caught 12 passes for 142 yards for the Griffins (2-6, 2-4).

7. W&J men’s soccer clinched top seed in PAC

Jake Fetterman’s goal in the 10th minute led the Presidents past Grove City, 1-0, in their regular-season finale Saturday.

W&J (10-7-2, 7-0-1) earned its first regular-season conference title since 2010 and will host fourth-seeded Grove City in the semifinals Wednesday.

Second-seeded Geneva and third-seeded Westminster play in Wednesday’s other semifinal.

8. Slippery Rock women’s soccer clinches PSAC West title

Tyler Spence scored with one minute left as The Rock clipped Edinboro, 3-2, on Saturday.

Slippery Rock (14-3, 13-2) earned hosting rights for the semifinals and championship of the PSAC Tournament.

9. 3 Pitt wrestlers earn titles at Michigan State Open

Derry graduate Micky Phillippi (133), Bethel Park product Nino Bonaccorsi (184) and Cole Matthews (141 pounds) finished first Saturday at the season-opening event in East Lansing. The No. 14 Panthers open the dual season Saturday against Campbell.

10. RMU volleyball wins, coach hits milestone

The Colonials improved to 12-0 in the Northeast Conference with a four-set victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday.

Dale Starr, the winningest coach in school history, earned his 100th career NEC victory.

Emma Granger, who on Friday became the school’s all-time leader in aces, had a career-best 22 kills for the Colonials (22-3 overall).

Maria Alfano added 14 kills, and Lauren Kolenik had 10 in the win.

Sacred Heart dropped to 14-11, 9-3.
