Weekend College Top 10: IUP women surge past Cal (Pa.)

IUP’s Lexi Griggs had 22 points in a 76-61 victory over Cal (Pa.) on Saturday.

Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:

1. No. 8 IUP women outlast No. 20 Cal (Pa.) in PSAC showdown

Lexi Griggs (Vincentian) recorded a season-high 22 points as the Crimson Hawks downed the Vulcans, 76-61, on Saturday in a rematch of last year’s NCAA regional championship.

Lexi is averaging 20.3 PPG with a 77.8 FG% in her last 3 games against Cal U.

IUP won that matchup, too, and extended its winning streak to 14 on Sunday. The Crimson Hawks improved to 16-1, 11-0, with its only loss coming Nov. 15 to Glenville State.

Griggs, who played all 40 minutes, added seven rebounds and shot 10 of 14 from the field. As a team, IUP hit 28 of 47 shots (59.6 %), its best mark of the season.

Natalie Myers (Burrell) finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

Cal (13-4, 7-4 PSAC) shot 33.8% (22-of-65) from the floor. Ahmya Woodyard scored a team-high 18 points.

2. Pitt-Johnstown coach Rukavina earns 500th victory

Josh Wise (Washington) scored 21 points, including a 3-pointer with 1 minute, 5 seconds left, to help the Mountain Cats edge Slippery Rock, 72-69, on Saturday in the PSAC.

Bob Rukavina, who took over the program in 1989, improved to 500-347.

Fred Mulbah had 10 points and eight assists for Pitt-Johnstown (15-3, 9-2), which sits second in the West Division behind IUP (15-1, 10-1).

Will Robinson Jr. led The Rock (8-9, 4-7) with 24 points.

3. OT victory puts Grove City men into tie for 1st

The Wolverines went on an 11-0 run in overtime and topped Westminster, 91-80, on Saturday in a PAC game that featured 12 ties.

Grove City (8-7, 5-2) and Chatham (10-6, 5-2) are a half-game ahead of Westminster (10-7, 5-3).

James Wells led the Wolverines with 24 points, Erik Meiners had a career-best 22 points and Justice Rice (Monessen) scored 20.

Preston Stitt paced Westminster with 20 points.

4. Balanced scoring helps No. 7 IUP rally

Malik Miller had 22 points, and all five Crimson Hawks starters scored in double figures in their 86-69 PSAC win over Cal (Pa.) on Saturday.

IUP (15-1, 10-1) trailed by 18 points less than nine minutes into the game before coming back.

Armoni Foster, Ethan Porterfield and Dave Morris had 17 points apiece for the Crimson Hawks.

Luke House led Cal (11-6, 7-4) with 18 points.

5. RMU women remain unbeaten in conference

Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu totaled 17 points and 17 rebounds, and the Colonials completed a season sweep of Merrimack with a 72-50 rout Saturday.

Isabella Posset added 16 points for Robert Morris (10-6, 5-0 Northeast Conference).

6. La Roche women extend winning streak to 9

Jenna Cole (Norwin) finished with 21 points and a career-best 16 rebounds as the Redhawks downed Hilbert, 84-69, in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game Saturday.

It was the first double-double of the season for Cole, the reigning AMCC Player of the Year.

Dasja Anderson contributed 16 points, six rebounds and four assists for La Roche (10-4, 10-0).

Hilbert slipped to 11-4, 8-2.

7. No. 14 Penn State men’s volleyball storms back vs. No. 5 Lewis

The Nittany Lions won the final three sets and prevailed 22-25, 36-38, 25-14, 25-20, 15-12 on the road Saturday.

Bobby Wilden had 16 kills for Penn State (2-2), and Will Bantle recorded 19 digs. Cole Bogner added 51 assists.

Lewis dropped to 3-3.

The Nittany Lions swept No. 12 Loyola (Ill.), 33-31, 25-20, 25-16, on Friday.

8. Allegheny men match victory total from last season

Jordan Rawls (Allderdice) had 28 points and nine rebounds to lead the Gators past Denison, 72-69, in a North Coast Athletic Conference game Saturday. Rawls also moved into second place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,558 points.

Allegheny moved to 10-5, 4-4, after going 10-15 last winter.

The Gators trailed 38-27 at halftime, but a 13-4 run cut into the deficit. Brian Roberts made two free throws with under 10 seconds left to put Allegheny ahead 70-69, and an offensive foul on Denison gave the ball back to the Gators. Rawls added two free throws with five seconds left.

9. Point Park’s Burns eclipses 1,000 career points

Michelle Burns (Hempfield) scored 22 points, but the Pioneers’ five-game winning streak ended with an 84-74 setback against Ohio Christian on Saturday in the River States Conference.

Point Park (12-8, 2-4) bounced back with a 97-60 nonconference victory over Valley Forge on Sunday. Sierra Dawson (Elizabeth Forward) led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points.

10. 1st-place Saint Vincent women eclipse 100 points

Kayla Slovenec (Fox Chapel) and Taylor Boring had 17 points apiece, and the Bearcats improved to 7-0 in the PAC with a 106-54 victory at Geneva on Saturday.

Saint Vincent (11-5 overall) scored 33 points in the second quarter to pull away from the Golden Tornadoes (1-13, 0-7).
