Weekend College Top 10: La Roche men win battle of league unbeatens
Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:
1. La Roche men down Pitt-Greensburg in key AMCC matchup
Tyler Frederick (Butler) scored 25 of his career-high 34 points in the second half, and the Redhawks won 89-73 on Saturday in a meeting of conference unbeatens.
Frederick, who shot 15 of 21 from the field, added 12 rebounds and three steals for La Roche (5-5, 5-0). He leads the conference with 20.4 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
Cam Seigfried (Penn-Trafford) and Torian Jenkins led the Bobcats (7-2, 5-1) with 14 points apiece.
2. Vulcans coach Strom earns 200th win
Jess Strom became the eighth women’s basketball coach in the PSAC to reach the 200-victory milestone as Cal (Pa.) bested West Chester, 67-60, on Friday.
Strom, whose team lost to Millersville on Saturday, owns a career record of 200-54 in nine seasons.
3. Cal (Pa.) men rally, pull off double-OT victory
Brent Pegram scored 31 points and 11 rebounds — playing all 50 minutes — as the Vulcans topped Millersville, 106-102, in double overtime Saturday in a PSAC game.
Zyan Collins added a career-best 26 points for Cal (7-4, 3-2), which hit three 3-pointers in the last two minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime. The last one came from Tim Smith Jr. with 39 seconds left. Smith finished with a career-best 19 points.
Millersville dropped to 5-6, 2-3.
4. Mascaro’s career night lifts No. 11 IUP women
Justina Mascaro (Bethel Park) recorded personal bests of 32 points and 11 rebounds in a 69-61 triumph over Shippensburg on Saturday in the PSAC.
Mascaro, a transfer from Delaware, made 13 of 23 shots from the field.
The Crimson Hawks (10-1, 5-0), who had a 47-27 rebounding advantage, have won eight straight.
5. Pitt-Johnstown men rally from 22-point deficit
John Paul Kromka (Gateway) finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds, leading the Mountain Cats past Lock Haven, 96-92, in overtime Saturday in a PSAC game.
Pitt-Johnstown (10-2, 4-1) trailed by 16 with 4 minutes, 47 seconds left before going on a 13-0 run. Caiden Landis’ layup with 3 seconds left forced overtime.
Fred Mulbah put the Mountain Cats ahead for good on a three-point play in overtime to break an 85-85 tie.
Drew Magestro hit five 3s and had 19 points to go with 10 rebounds, and Mulbah totaled 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Lock Haven is 4-5, 1-4.
6. Grove City women off to best start since 1982-83
Kate Balcom scored 20 points, and the Wolverines forced 38 turnovers in a 75-45 rout of Juniata on Saturday in the Destinations New York City Invitational at Baruch College.
Grove City improved to 10-1.
Jess Bowen (North Hills) added 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and seven steals.
7. CMU men extend win streak to 7
Zach Howarth scored a season-high 24 points to lead Carnegie Mellon past Chatham, 86-64, on Saturday.
Senior Trent Suddeth added 13 points and a season-high 13 rebounds for the Tartans (7-2), who shot 49.3% from the field.
Malik Potter led Chatham (7-4) with 26 points.
8. Clarion wrestling earns 1st Mid-American Conference victory
Wins by 149-pounder Brock Zacherl, 157-pounder Avery Shay and 165-pounder Mike Bartolo helped the Golden Eagles defeat Lock Haven, 20-16, on Saturday.
It was the first conference win for Clarion (2-3, 1-1) since moving to the Division I MAC this winter and the first victory over Lock Haven since the 2013-14 season.
9. Point Park women hold on for victory
Taylor Rinn totaled 23 points — going 11 of 11 on free throws — and added 18 rebounds as the Pioneers edged Bryant & Stratton-Buffalo, 82-79, in a nonconference game Sunday.
Point Park (8-7) led by 26 entering the final quarter before Bryant & Stratton (11-2) came back.
Lexi Petit added 19 points, and Taylor Kirschner contributed 18 in the win.
10. Penn State wrestling dominate Wilkes Open
Seven Nittany Lions won titles, and 19 of the team’s 22 entries placed in the top five of their weight class Sunday.
Champions were: Brandon Meredith (125 pounds), Roman Bravo-Young (133), Hempfield graduate Jarod Verkleeren (149), Joe Lee (165), Mark Hall (174), Michael Beard (197) and Seth Nevills (285).
