Weekend College Top 10: Pitt-Johnstown wrestling coach becomes NCAA's all-time wins leader

1. Pitt-Johnstown wrestling coach makes NCAA history

Pat Pecora became college wrestling’s all-time leader in wins with 617 as the fourth-ranked Mountain Cats defeated 11th-ranked Mercyhurst, 22-12, on Friday.

Pecora, in his 44th season at Pitt-Johnstown, has a career record of 617-151-8. He broke the all-divisions record held by Dale Thomas, who coached from 1957-90 at Oregon State.

Connor Craig clinched Friday’s win with a major decision over Trever Begin in the 184-pound match for Pitt-Johnstown (20-3, 6-0 PSAC).

Top-ranked Chris Eddins (Greensburg Salem) earned his 99th career victory with a 10-3 major decision over Alex Samson at 149 pounds.

2. No. 5 IUP women push winning streak to 19

Lexi Griggs (Vincentian Academy) had 19 points, Rajah Fink added 16 points and seven rebounds and the Crimson Hawks routed Slippery Rock, 77-48, in the PSAC on Saturday.

Natalie Myers (Burrell) contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds for IUP (21-1, 16-0), which extended its school-record winning streak. The Crimson Hawks lead Gannon (18-5, 14-3) by three games in the PSAC West with five games remaining.

Brooke Hinderliter had 23 points for The Rock (6-17, 4-13).

3. RMU women’s basketball improves to 11-0 in conference

Nneka Ezeigbo finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu added 13 points and 10 rebounds and the Colonials rolled past Sacred Heart, 67-38, on Saturday in the Northeast Conference.

Robert Morris (16-6 overall) matched last season’s team for the best conference start in program history. The Colonials visit Wagner at 7 p.m. Monday.

4. La Roche men top Penn State Behrend in 2OT

Darrell Barron (Northgate), making his season debut after a summer injury, scored all seven of his points in the second overtime to lead the Redhawks to a 96-92 triumph Saturday in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

Tyler Frederick (Butler) had 24 points and 13 rebounds for his conference-leading 13th double-double this season for La Roche (15-6, 15-1). Kennedy Smith added 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Penn State Behrend dropped to 14-7, 11-5.

5. Point Park women three-peat in indoor track and field

Alyssa Campbell (New Brighton) was named River States Conference Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, and Point Park cruised to the conference title Friday in Tiffin, Ohio. The Pioneers had 212 points, 95 more than second-place IU East.

Campbell won the 3,000 and 5,000 meters and helped the 3,200 relay and distance medley relay teams take first place.

Reba Bartram placed second in the 600, 1,000 and mile and was part of both winning relays.

Jim Spisak was named River States Conference Coach of the Year.

6. No. 2 Penn State wrestling routs No. 6 Minnesota

The Nittany Lions won seven of 10 matches en route to a 31-10 victory Sunday in the Big Ten.

Key wins for Penn State included second-ranked Nick Lee’s pin against fifth-ranked Mitch McKee at 141 pounds and second-ranked Mark Hall’s 7-4 decision over eighth-ranked Devin Skatzka at 174 pounds.

The Nittany Lions improved to 10-2, 7-1, and the Golden Gophers slipped to 9-6, 4-3.

7. Grove City’s Peters joins 1,000-point club

Senior Nate Peters scored a season-best 26 points to eclipse 1,000 for his career as the Wolverines rallied past Geneva, 76-71, in the PAC on Saturday.

Peters made 12 of 15 shots and hit the milestone on a two-handed dunk with three minutes remaining. The basket gave Grove City a 65-64 lead.

James Wells added 15 points for the Wolverines (14-7, 11-2 PAC), who earned their 10th straight victory, the team’s longest streak since 1990-91.

R.J. Bell and Nick Rusyn had 15 points each for Geneva (10-10, 6-6).

8. W&J’s Seemann goes off for 36 points

Junior Cameron Seemann scored a personal-high 36 points — the most by a PAC player this season — to lead the Presidents men past Thiel, 83-72, on Saturday.

Seemann made 11 of 16 shots and 10 of 12 free throws for W&J (12-10, 7-6).

Thiel dropped to 6-13, 5-7.

9. Seigfreid eclipses 1,000 points in Pitt-Greensburg’s victory

Junior Cam Seigfreid (Penn-Trafford) became the 10th player in program history to score 1,000 points as the Bobcats downed Medaille, 86-77, on Saturday in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game.

Seigfreid finished with seven points, eight rebounds and seven assists, hitting the milestone on a 3-pointer to open the game.

JoJo France scored 21 points for Pitt-Greensburg (18-4, 14-3), and Cody Spaid hit 9 of 10 shots and had 20 points.

Medaille fell to 10-12, 8-9.

10. No. 9 Penn State hockey sinks No. 13 Buckeyes

Brandon Biro had two goals and an assist to lead the Nittany Lions to a 6-3 win in the Big Ten on Saturday.
