Weekend College Top 10: Pitt softball wins 1st ACC series of year

Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:

1. Pitt softball wins 1st ACC series of season

Sarah Dawson threw a two-hitter, and Walker Barbee homered, tripled and finished with three RBIs as the Panthers defeated Syracuse, 6-1, in the decisive game of their series Sunday. Pitt improved to 9-38, 4-14, and the Orange dropped to 19-25, 8-10.

2. Allegheny baseball hands No. 11 Wooster 1st conference loss

Sean Kealey (Baldwin) struck out five and allowed two hits in seven innings, pacing the Gators to a 6-1 victory in the first game of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday. The two hits were the fewest this season for Wooster (18-8, 9-1). Bret Kelly went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Allegheny (16-13, 6-5), which lost the second game 16-0 in seven innings.

3. W&J baseball rolls to sweep of Geneva

The Presidents improved to 17-1 in the PAC after defeating the Golden Tornadoes, 12-4 and 8-0, on Saturday. In the opener, James Artale went 4 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs, and Josh Crummer finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs and four runs. In the second game, Mullen Socha went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Geneva fell to 6-20, 1-15.

4. Duquesne women’s lacrosse clinches spot in A-10 tourney

Rilee Bradshaw had six goals, and Sarah Kollhoff added four as the Dukes ended the regular season with a 19-11 triumph over La Salle. Duquesne (9-7, 4-5 Atlantic 10) is seeded sixth for the A-10 championship and faces third-seeded Richmond in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

5. Cal (Pa.), Seton Hill split key PSAC doubleheader

The Griffins took Game 1, 5-2, before the Vulcans bounced back for a 4-1 victory in Game 2 on Saturday as the teams continue to jockey for position in the West Division. In the opener, Chris Law (Knoch) went 3 for 4 for an RBI for Seton Hill, and Jared Kollar (Latrobe) threw a four-hitter. In the second game, Bradyn Kail (7-1) threw a five-hitter for Cal, and Corey Fogle (Connellsville) drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. Cal (28-9, 13-5) is second in the division behind Gannon, and Seton Hill (20-16, 11-7) is fourth.

6. Cal (Pa.)’s Means breaks school record

Jae’Len Means (Gateway) won the 200-meter dash in a school-record time of 21.01 seconds Saturday at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. Means beat his old school record by .02 seconds. He also took seventh in the 100.

7. No. 10 CMU women’s tennis prevails

Carnegie Mellon improved to 15-6 with a 5-4 victory over No. 22 Washington and Lee on Saturday. Danna Taylor, Janabelle Wu and Jamie Vizelman won at singles.

8. No. 25 IUP lacrosse extends win streak to 6

Ally Burrows had four goals and four assists in a 15-11 victory over Bloomsburg on Saturday. Leah Hunter and Victoria Kerkovich added three goals apiece for IUP (9-5, 7-3).

9. McCulley leads outburst for RMU men’s lacrosse

Brad McCulley scored a career-best five goals, helping the Colonials down Bryant, 20-16, in a Northeast Conference match Saturday. It was the most goals for RMU since 2013 and the 10th 20-goal output in program history. The Colonials improved to 6-7, 3-2, and Bryant dropped to 3-10, 1-5.

10. PSU men’s volleyball drops 5-set thriller in conference final

Brett Wildman had a career-best 24 kills, but the Nittany Lions lost 26-28, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 13-15 to Princeton on Saturday in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championship match. It was the first EIVA title match to go to five sets since 2002. Penn State finished the season 15-15.
