Weekend College Top 10: Robert Morris football picks apart Duquesne

Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:

1. Turnovers fuel Robert Morris’ win over rival Duquesne

Mason Gray returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the second half, helping the Colonials extend their winning streak to five with a 41-21 victory in a matchup of Northeast Conference unbeatens Saturday.

Gray ran back interceptions 36 and 81 yards, becoming the second Robert Morris player with two pick-6s in a game. The Colonials had four interceptions overall and forced seven turnovers.

Robert Morris (6-4, 5-0), which went winless in the conference the past two seasons, is tied for first place with Central Connecticut State, its opponent Saturday.

Linebacker Aniello Buzzacco had a game-high 11 tackles, forced a fumble, recovered one and recorded an interception 22 yards for the Colonials. Terence Stephens Jr. (West Allegheny) ran 20 times for 199 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown.

Dukes quarterback Brett Brumbaugh (South Fayette), making his first collegiate start, went 24 of 50 for 302 yards and two touchdowns. Duquesne dropped to 6-3, 4-1.

2. Pitt men’s soccer advances to ACC semifinals for first time

Edward Kizza scored twice, including 3 minutes, 42 seconds into overtime, as the host Panthers downed N.C. State, 2-1, in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals Sunday.

Fourth-seeded Pitt (9-6-3) held an 11-7 advantage in shots and 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Panthers visit top-seeded Clemson (15-1-1), the No. 2-ranked team in the country, on Wednesday. The teams did not play in the regular season.

3. No. 9 Slippery Rock football finishes record season 10-0

Roland Rivers III threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns and set the school’s single-season and career passing TD records as The Rock routed Gannon, 56-7, on Saturday in the PSAC.

Rivers has thrown for 36 TD passes this season (breaking Tanner Garry’s record set in 2017) and 64 for his career (breaking Nate Crookshank mark set in 2007).

Slippery Rock (7-0 PSAC West) will visit No. 15 Kutztown (10-0) in the PSAC championship game Saturday.

Henry Litwin had nine catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns for The Rock.

4. Pitt-Greensburg women’s soccer earns first AMCC crown

Erika Caladro (South Allegheny) scored her first collegiate goal to break a tie three minutes before halftime, and the Bobcats edge Penn State Behrend, 3-2, on Saturday.

Allie Grimm (Connellsville) and Ashley Lucas also had goals for Pitt-Greensburg (19-0-1), which earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

5. W&J men’s soccer wins PAC title

Jake Fetterman had two goals and an assist, leading the Presidents past Geneva, 4-2, in the conference championship Saturday.

It was the first PAC title since 2007 for W&J (12-7-2), which earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Alvaro Viadas added a goal and an assist for the Presidents, who set a single-season school record for goals (53).

6. Grove City women’s soccer repeats as PAC champ

Michaela Burke finished with two goals and an assist in the Wolverines’ 4-1 triumph over Chatham in the conference title game Saturday.

Columbia Harkrader made seven saves for Grove City (12-6-2), which earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Chatham (8-7-4) was making its first title-game appearance.

7. Westminster volleyball qualifies for NCAAs

Reilly DeGeorge recorded 10 kills and 17 digs, and Becky Adelman added 10 kills and five blocks to lift the Titans to a 3-1 victory over Geneva in the PAC title match Saturday.

Westminster (26-6), which earned its first conference title since 2008, will open the NCAA Division III Tournament this week.

Daphne Hunsinger totaled 33 assists and 26 digs for Geneva (22-9).

8. Point Park women’s cross country three-peats

The Pioneers edged WVU Tech by three points in the River States Conference championships Saturday in Schenley Park.

Alyssa Campbell, the runner-up last year, took first and earned River States Conference Runner of the Year. Teammate Reba Bartram placed third.

Point Park earned an automatic bid to the NAIA national championships Nov. 22 in Vancouver, Wash.

9. Carnegie Mellon football edges Westminster

Luke Bikulege scored on a 44-yard touchdown run as part of a balanced Tartans rushing attack, helping CMU to a 20-14 victory Saturday in a matchup of two of the PAC’s top teams.

Chris Hass had 18 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown for Carnegie Mellon (7-2, 6-2).

Cole Konieczka threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns, both to Connor Cox, for Westminster (6-2, 5-2).

10. No. 11 IUP men’s basketball goes 2-0 on opening weekend

Transfer Tommy Demogerontas finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds in the Crimson Hawks’ 80-73 triumph over visiting Concord on Saturday at the IRMC/Hilton Garden Inn Classic.

Malik Miller also scored 21 points, and Shawndale Jones contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds.

IUP beat West Virginia Wesleyan, 75-52, on Friday behind Armoni Foster’s 21 points.
