Weekend College Top 10: Robert Morris women's hockey wins thriller

Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:

1. RMU women’s hockey wins in final seconds

Wisconsin transfer Kyleigh Hanzlik, playing in her second game for Robert Morris, scored with seven seconds left as the Colonials edged Colgate, 6-5, in the third-place game of the Battle at the Burgh championship Sunday at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.

It was the first goal in 27 college games for Hanzlik, a redshirt sophomore.

Emily Curlett had a goal and three assists for RMU (11-7-2) en route to a spot on the all-tournament team.

Jaycee Gebhard and Joelle Fiala added two assists apiece.

The Colonials lost Saturday’s opener against No. 1 Wisconsin, 3-1, despite 40 saves by Raygan Kirk.

2. Grove City women off to best start in 40 years

Jess Bowen (North Hills) scored 25 points, and the Wolverines routed Chatham, 77-35, in the PAC on Saturday to improve to 11-1 this season.

Grove City matched the 1979-80 team for the best start in program history.

Bowen made 5 of 7 3-pointers.

Kate Balcom added 12 points to move into a tie for ninth place on Grove City’s all-time scoring list with 1,181 points.

Chatham (7-4, 1-3) shot 26% from the field.

3. La Roche men stay unbeaten in conference

Tyler Frederick (Butler) had 30 points and 19 rebounds, leading the Redhawks past D’Youville, 90-79, on Saturday in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

Kennedy Smith added 16 points and six assists for La Roche (6-5, 6-0), which has won five straight.

D’Youville dropped to 1-11, 0-7.

4. Seton Hill women improve to 10-1

Katie Nolan’s 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Griffins defeated Mercyhurst, 85-62, on Friday in a PSAC game.

Cheyenne Trest (Canon-McMillan) contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Griffins, who are 5-1 in the West Division and tied for second with Gannon behind IUP (6-0).

5. No. 11 IUP women rally past Lock Haven

Delaware transfer Justina Mascaro (Bethel Park) had 18 of her 22 points in the second half as the Crimson Hawks came back for a 64-51 victory in the PSAC on Friday.

IUP (11-1, 6-0) trailed by 11 points at the half but outscored Lock Haven, 46-22, the rest of the way.

Natalie Myers (Burrell) added 17 points for the Crimson Hawks, who are alone in first place in the West Division.

6. Wins keep coming for Pitt-Johnstown men

Fred Mulbah totaled 16 points, five rebounds and five assists as the Mountain Cats downed Cal (Pa.), 77-57, on Friday in the PSAC.

John Paul Kromka (Gateway) added 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks for the Mountain Cats (12-2, 5-1), who are tied for first place in the West Division.

Zyan Collins led Cal (7-5, 3-3) with 17 points.

7. Point Park women recover from sluggish start to prevail

Michelle Burns (Hempfield) scored 26 points as the Pioneers rallied from a 12-point hole in the third quarter to defeat Bryant & Stratton College-Rochester, 68-64, on Friday.

Point Park (9-7) shot 7 of 41 (17%) in the first half and trailed by seven at halftime.

Burns made a 3 at the third-quarter buzzer to cut the deficit to 48-45, and the Pioneers outscored Bryant & Stratton-Rochester, 21-12, in the fourth quarter.

Taylor Kirschner (Quigley Catholic) finished with 21 points and five 3s in the victory.

8. Pitt-Greensburg men pull away for victory

Torian Jenkins had 12 points and 18 rebounds, leading the Bobcats past Pitt-Bradford, 76-62, in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup Saturday.

UPG (9-2, 6-1) ended the game on a 21-7 run.

Matt Johnson led Pitt-Greensburg with 16 points.

Pitt-Bradford dropped to 1-10, 0-6.

9. Pitt women’s swimming and diving continues dominance vs. WVU

Seniors Valerie Daigneault (100 backstroke, 200 backstroke) and Sarah Giamber (500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle) won two events apiece, helping the Panthers to a 175-125 victory Saturday. It was Pitt’s eighth straight win over the Mountaineers.

The West Virginia men beat Pitt, 179.5-120.5.

10. Neely’s milestone win leads W&J at Waynesburg Invitational

Hunter Neely (Bentworth) record his 100th career victory and finished second at 174 pounds on Sunday.

The Presidents took third out of 15 teams at the event, which featured schools from Division II, D-III and junior colleges.

Michael Heinl (149 pounds) and Alex Donahue (197) also placed second for W&J.
