Weekend College Top 10: Slippery Rock football makes huge comeback for PSAC title

1. Slippery Rock rallies in PSAC championship
Charles Snorweah’s 8-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds left lifted the No. 8 Rock past No. 13 Kutztown, 37-35, on Saturday.

Slippery Rock (11-0) earned the No. 1 seed in Super Region One and received a bye in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Rock trailed 35-21 entering the fourth quarter and got within a touchdown on Roland Rivers III’s 2-yard TD pass to DeSean Dinkins. Jake Chapla (Plum) further narrowed the gap on a 31-yard field goal with 3 minutes, 58 seconds left.
Rivers earned game MVP after throwing for 302 yards and four TDs.
Henry Litwin broke The Rock’s single-season school record for TD catches. He made eight receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns, upping his season total to 15.

2. IUP football clinches playoff spot
Quinton Maxwell threw four touchdowns, leading the No. 18 Crimson Hawks past Shippensburg, 54-24, on Saturday. Samir Bullock added two rushing TDs for IUP (10-1), and Damon Lloyd had 13 tackles.
The Crimson Hawks earned the fourth seed in Super Region One and host fifth-seeded Shepherd (9-2) on Saturday. The winner will take on Slippery Rock.

3. Carnegie Mellon knocks off No. 20 Case Western in Academic Bowl
Sean Knight returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown as the Tartans forced four turnovers in a 24-21 victory over the previously unbeaten Spartans in the PAC on Saturday.
JD Dayhuff threw for two touchdowns, and Mason Tolliver finished with a career-high 14 tackles for Carnegie Mellon (7-2, 6-0).
Drew Saxton (South Fayette) threw for 273 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions for Case Western (9-1).

4. Pitt women’s volleyball locks up NCAA bid
The Panthers (26-1, 15-0) swept Duke on Saturday to win the ACC title and become the first school in the country to clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Chinaza Ndee had 12 kills for the Panthers, and Kayla Lund contributed 11.

5. Slippery Rock women’s soccer wins PSAC championship
PSAC Tournament MVP Emma Yoder made five saves, including one on a late penalty kick, to help The Rock down Edinboro, 2-1, in the conference title game Sunday.

Sofia Harrison and Kayla Swope scored for Slippery Rock (18-3), which set a single-season school record for wins and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

6. CMU women’s soccer advances in NCAA Tournament
Jocelyn Mayer scored her first goal of the season, and the No. 25 Tartans edged Swarthmore, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday.

Andrea Sipos had two saves for Carnegie Mellon (13-5-1), which faces No. 10 Ohio Northern on Friday in Wheaton, Ill.

7. Grove City football shuts out Thiel
Cody Gustafson caught eight passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns — becoming the Wolverines’ all-time leader with 182 receptions — as Grove City cruised 63-0 on Saturday for its first shutout in six years.
Wesley Schools ran for 75 yards and three touchdowns, giving him an NCAA Division-III leading 25 TDs this season.
Grove City (8-2, 7-2 PAC) had five interceptions, including one Jacob Ross (Franklin Regional) returned 40 yards for a touchdown.

8. Penn State’s Sucese sets goals record
Senior hockey player Nate Sucese scored his 55th and 56th career goals to become the program’s all-time leader as the No. 8 Nittany Lions rallied past Minnesota, 6-3, on Saturday. Penn State improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten.

9. Geneva women’s volleyball earns spot in NCCAA Tournament
Kacey Costal totaled 16 kills as the Golden Tornadoes defeated Johnson (Tenn.) in four sets Saturday in the championship of the National Christian College Athletic Association Mideast Regional Tournament.

Millicent Dofelmier and Hope Shook added 10 kills apiece for Geneva (24-9), which will meet Toccoa Falls (Ga.) at noon Wednesday at Bob Jones University (S.C.).

10. Robert Morris men’s hockey wins 4th straight in conference
Goals by Santeri Hartikainen and Aidan Spellacy six minutes apart in the third period broke a 1-1 tie, and the Colonials defeated host Bentley, 4-2, on Saturday to complete a sweep in the Atlantic Hockey Association.
