Weekend College Top 10: Westminster, Slippery Rock pull big upsets

Every Monday, the Tribune-Review will highlight 10 top area college performances from the weekend:

1. Westminster men hand Saint Vincent 1st PAC loss

Sophomore Isaac Stamatiades recorded 19 points — including back-to-back 3s in overtime — and added a career-best 16 rebounds to lead the Titans past the Bearcats, 87-80, on Saturday. Westminster (9-13, 7-6) led by as many as 19 points in the second half, but Saint Vincent (18-3, 11-1) rallied with a 23-2 run and took a 68-66 lead with less than a minute left. However, Lloyd Chapman tied the score on a jumper with 32 seconds left, and the Bearcats missed a 3 at the buzzer. The Titans pulled away with an 8-0 run in overtime. Austin Armwood had 18 points for Westminster, and David Stephen led Saint Vincent with 23 points.

2. Slippery Rock women snap 35-game skid vs. Cal

Brooke Hinderliter totaled 27 points and went 13 for 13 on free throws, leading The Rock to a 72-61 stunner over No. 10 Cal (Pa.) in a PSAC game Saturday. Slippery Rock (9-11, 7-7) had not defeated the Vulcans since the 2001-02 season. Reserve Madison Johnson added 19 points, going 9 for 9 on free throws, and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double for The Rock. As a team, Slippery Rock made 27 of 32 on free throws. Cal (18-2, 12-2), which dropped into second place behind IUP in the PSAC West standings, shot 22 of 69 (32 percent) from the field. Seairra Barrett (Central Valley) scored 26 points but shot 9 for 26 from the field. Slippery Rock is tied for fourth place in the division, with the top six teams advancing to the PSAC Tournament.

3. Mercyhurst men shock No. 4 IUP in final second

Trystan Pratapas hit a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left as the Lakers earned a 64-63 victory Saturday in the PSAC. Mercyhurst (15-4, 10-4 PSAC) called timeout with 7.2 seconds left, and Derrick Ellis found Pratapas in the corner for the winning basket. The Crimson Hawks (19-2, 12-2) had a final chance but couldn’t connect on a full-court inbounds pass. IUP senior Dante Lombardi had 12 points and seven assists, passing Devante Chance as the school’s all-time leader in assists with 513. Classmate Jacobo Diaz (19 points, six rebounds) became the second player in program history to record 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds, joining Darryl Webb. Nelson Maxwell led Mercyhurst with 11 points.

4. No. 1 Penn State wrestling outduels No. 5 Michigan

Nearly 16,000 fans watched as the Nittany Lions bounced back from an early deficit to defeat the Wolverines, 25-11, in a Big Ten match Friday. Penn State (10-0, 6-0) fell behind 11-3 after four matches, but top-ranked Jason Nolf (Kittanning) began the comeback with a victory at 157 pounds. No. 1 Vincenzo Joseph (Central Catholic) followed by beating No. 5 Logan Massa at 165. Michigan slipped to 9-1, 5-1.

5. RMU women’s basketball maintains perfect NEC start

The Colonials became the second school in conference history to open 9-0 in consecutive seasons with a 63-43 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday. Nneka Ezeigbo led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points for Robert Morris (12-8), and reserves Natalie Villaflor and Nina Augustin contributed 10 apiece.

6. Rawls, Allegheny knock off No. 14 Wabash

Jordan Rawls (Allderdice) scored 22 of his 31 points in the second half, leading the Gators to an 80-68 victory Friday for their first win over a ranked team since 2007. Rawls shot 8 of 10 from the field and hit 12 of 14 free throws. Brian Roberts Jr. added 20 points and seven assists for Allegheny (8-12, 4-10 North Coast Athletic Conference), which lost 84-69 to Depauw on Saturday. Wabash is 18-3, 12-2.

7. No. 5 IUP women move back into 1st place

Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg Central Catholic) scored 19 points as the Crimson Hawks downed Mercyhurst, 81-56, in the PSAC on Saturday. The win, coupled with Cal (Pa.)’s loss, allowed IUP (18-1, 13-1) to take over the top spot in the West Division. Appleby also had five of her team’s 11 steals. Brittany Robinson added 16 points, and Lexi Griggs (Vincentian) had 15.

8. Thiel women end drought vs. W&J

Jess Vormelker had 26 points and 11 rebounds as the Tomcats earned a 73-64 PAC victory Saturday, Thiel’s first win against the Presidents since 2011. The Tomcats (5-15, 3-8) hadn’t won at W&J since 2008. Vormelker shot 6 of 13 on 3-pointers, and Courtney Harriman scored 16 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Maria Lawhorne led the Presidents (14-7, 10-3) with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

9. Queen breaks record as W&J men prevail in OT

Zach Queen (Hempfield) hit a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, and Washington & Jefferson went on for an 80-76 victory over Thiel in a PAC game Saturday. Queen’s 3 gave him 69 on the season, breaking the record of Brandon Studer (2003-04). Cameron Seemann led the Presidents (9-13, 7-6) with 21 points and eight rebounds. Terrance Holloway had 26 points for Thiel (6-14, 4-7).

10. Wise eclipses 1,000 points for Pitt-Johnstown

Josh Wise (Washington) became the 30th Mountain Cats player to hit the 1,000-point milestone, scoring 18 in a 76-65 victory over Gannon on Saturday in the PAC. Pitt-Johnstown (13-8, 8-6) ended a seven-game skid against the Golden Knights, who dropped to 8-13, 6-8.
