University of Minnesota forward Logan Cooley, a native of West Mifflin, was named one of three finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, an honor that recognizes the top men’s player in college hockey.
Joining him are fellow Minnesota forward Matthew Knies and Michigan forward Adam Fantilli.
The award’s foundation announced the three finalists Thursday, and the award will be presented at 6 p.m. April 7. NHL Network will carry the presentation.
Currently a freshman, Cooley has helped steer his team to the Frozen Four of the NCAA tournament. In 37 games this season, Cooley has a team-best 57 points (20 goals, 37 assists).
Only Fantilli, also a freshman, has more points this season at the NCAA level. Appearing in 35 games, Fantilli has posted 64 points (29 goals, 35 assists).
Knies, a sophomore, has played in 38 games and posted 41 points (21 goals, 20 assists).
Minnesota is scheduled to face Boston University in one of the semifinal games in Tampa on April 6 while Michigan will square off with Quinnipiac.
This past July, Cooley was selected third overall in the NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes. That was the highest a player from Western Pennsylvania has ever been selected in the NHL Draft. He is an alumnus of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite youth program.
