West Mifflin's Logan Cooley helps United States win gold at IIHF World Championship

Utah Mammoth forward Logan Cooley, a native of West Mifflin, recorded the primary assist on the only goal of the United States’ 1-0 overtime win against Switzerland in the championship game of the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) World Championship tournament at at Avicii Arena in Stockholm on Sunday.

Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson scored at 62:02 of the overtime period.

The victory gave the United States gold in this tournament for the first time since 1933.

Cooley opened the contest as the United States’ top-line center had one shot and was 5 for 9 (55.5%) on faceoffs while logging an even 18:00 of ice time on 23 shifts.

Highlights:

Throughout the tournament, Cooley appeared in 10 games and scored 12 points (four goals, eight assists).

Pittsburgh Penguins assistant coach Mike Vellucci served in the same capacity on the United States’ staff.
