West Point 11U girls open state tournament with win

West Point 11U girls’ softball team opened the Pennsylvania Little League state tournament with a 4-1 victory against the Cambridge/Conneaut Lake/French Creek Valley/Saegertown All-Stars Friday at Wellsboro.

Braylyn Graft’s three-run double in the top of the sixth inning snapped a 1-1 score.

Winning pitcher Jayelyn Luft struck out 13 while allowing four walks, four hits and one run. She and twin sister Jocelyn Luft each had two hits. Jayelyn Luft also swiped three of West Point’s six stolen bases.

West Point took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI walk by Morgan Maiers. CCFS tied the score in the fifth inning.

West Point didn’t commit an error, and Piper Hoppel had 13 chances.

West Point will face Lower Merion at 2 p.m. Saturday. Lower Merion drew a first-round bye.

West Point is looking for its 38th state title.

West Point drops pair

The West Point Major Division All-Stars dropped two games at Newton Square.

West Point lost to Media, 9-0, and to Mifflinburg, 6-1.

No other details were made available.

Quakertown takes title

Quakertown captured the Pennsylvania American Legion baseball title by defeating Paxton, 14-10, Friday at Rosa-Oglietti Park in Derry Township.

Quakertown went 5-0 in the tournament by defeating Pittston, 4-0, Charleroi, 10-0, Paxton, 8-3, Falls, 8-6, and Paxton, 14-10.

Quakertown and Paxton advance to the Mid-Atlantic Tournament begin Wednesday at Morgantown, W.Va.

Quakertown will face the West Virginia champion at 4 p.m. at Dale Miller Field, and Paxton faces Brooklawn, N.J. at 1.

The other teams include Harrison, Ohio, Fort Cumberland, Md., Wilmington, Del., and Morgantown.
