West Virginia women will meet Princeton in 8/9 NCAA Tournament game

The West Virginia women’s basketball team will make its 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament when it meets Princeton (25-4) of the Ivy League at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Albany 2 region in Iowa City, Iowa.

The winner could meet Iowa and college basketball’s all-time leading scorer, Caitlin Clark, in the second round. Iowa opens the tournament against either Holy Cross or UT Martin.

The Mountaineers will take a 24-7 record and fourth-place Big 12 finish (tied with Iowa State and Baylor) into the tournament. WVU is the eighth seed in the region.

Princeton, the No. 9 seed, will make its 11th NCAA Tournament appearance after winning a fifth consecutive Ivy League Tournament championship. Princeton has won a first-round game in each of the past two seasons..

The Mountaineers advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament where they lost to Kansas State, 65-62, on March 9. West Virginia junior J.J. Quinerly, a first-team All-Big 12 guard and conference Defensive Player of the Year, totaled 45 points in two tournament games, including a 70-55 victory against Cincinnati.
