West Virginia's David Long, 3 RBs among Steelers predraft visitors
The Pittsburgh Steelers continued to look at skill position players Tuesday when they had three running backs and one wide receiver among their five predraft visitors to UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
Visiting were running backs Travis Homer of Miami, Jordan Scarlett of Florida and Mike Weber of Ohio State; wide receiver Miles Boykin of Notre Dame and linebacker David Long of West Virginia.
Long does not count against the Steelers’ allotted 30 visitors because he is considered a local player. The Steelers have conducted eight official visits in two days, not counting Long and former Woodland Hills running back Mile Sanders, who visited Monday.
They have hosted five running backs, three wide receivers, a tight end and a linebacker.
If the Steelers don’t get an inside linebacker in the first round, Long could be a target later in the draft. Rated the No. 12 inside linebacker in his class by CBS Sports.com, the 5-foot-11, 227-pound long is a bit undersized, but he had a highly productive career in Morgantown. He won the team’s defensive player of the year award in 2017 and became the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2018. In his redshirt junior season, Long led the Mountaineers with 111 tackles, including 19 for loss. He had eight sacks, four pass breakups and a forced fumble.
The Steelers continue to evaluate running backs despite the presence of starter James Conner and backup Jaylen Samuels on the depth chart.
CBS Sports.com has Weber ranked as the No. 10 running back in the class. The website has Scarlett listed at No. 19 and Homer at No. 20.
Weber (5-10, 211) rushed for 954 yards and scored five touchdowns in his final season at Ohio State. He also caught 21 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. His best season was in 2016 when he rushed for 1,096 yards for the Buckeyes.
Scarlett (5-11, 208) had a troubled career at Florida. He was arrested on a misdemeanor charge for marijuana possession in his freshman year and was suspended for his junior season because of his involvement in a credit-card fraud scandal. In 2018, Scarlett started 12 games and rushed for 776 yards (5.9 average) and five touchdowns. He caught 10 passes for 84 yards.
Homer (5-10, 201) started the final nine games of his sophomore season and all 13 as a junior when he rushed for 985 yards (6.0 average) with four touchdowns. He also caught 19 passes for 186 yards.
Boykin is rated the No. 17 wide receiver by CBS Sports.com. At 6-4, 220, he is one of the biggest receivers in his class. As a junior, he led Notre Dame with 59 catches for 872 yards and eight touchdowns.
