There will be basketball at Saint Vincent College this season after all.

The sport is coming back in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with a shared chorus among the 10 schools: better late than never.

The NCAA Division III league, which postponed winter sports months ago when the covid-19 pandemic bum-rushed daily life, released modified schedules with each men’s and women’s team playing nine regular-season games.

PAC teams will play conference games only, with staggered starts, beginning Jan. 23. The regular season will conclude Feb. 27.

The Saint Vincent men will host Geneva at 3 p.m. on Feb. 6, and the Bearcats women’s team will travel to Geneva that day for a 7 p.m. tip in Beaver Falls.

There will be conference tournaments, set to begin March 1. All conference teams will enter postseason play.

PAC schools can decide how many, if any, on-campus students can attend games. No outside or visiting fans will be permitted.

Men’s basketball

West Liberty: Sophomore Bryce Butler (Latrobe) had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists as the Division II No. 4-ranked Hilltoppers defeated Fairmont State, 96-84.

Butler added 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 134-72 win over Frostburg State.

Wrestling

Bucknell: Junior Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon), ranked ninth nationally at 165 pounds, picked up a pair of wins as the Bison dropped dual meets against West Virginia and No. 19 Oklahoma.

Iowa: Senior Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional), the No. 1 ranked wrestler in at 125 pounds, opened the season with a pin, defeating Liam Cronin in 1 minutes, 21 seconds as top-ranked Iowa defeated No. 6 Nebraska, 31-6.

Pitt: Redshirt junior 133-pounder Micky Phillippi (Derry) registered a first-period pin and freshman Colton Camacho (Franklin Regional) won by decision at 125 as the 12th-ranked Panthers (2-0) controlled Duke, 31-12, in their ACC opener. Phillippi is 3-0 this season.

Women’s indoor track and field

Carlow: Senior Olivia Miller (Ligonier Valley) took third in the triple jump (10.79 meters), seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (10.8 seconds) and 10th in the long jump (4.97 meters) at the Youngstown State Collegiate Invitational.

Baseball

Pitt: Matt Tarabek (Hempfield) is set to begin a new chapter in his college playing career. After a stellar four years at Fordham, he is playing at least one more season at Pitt while he pursues a master’s degree. He could be a corner infielder or designated hitter for the Panthers.

In 2020 at Fordham, he hit .340 with two home runs, 11 runs and 14 RBIs in 16 games of a shortened season. The previous year, he set the single-season record in the program for games played record, appearing in all 62 games at third base.

Honors

Westminster: Former volleyball standout Rachel Moore (Greensburg Central Catholic) was named to the Westminster College All-Decade Team. She was selected as a second-team libero.

Moore was a three-time All-PAC player and is one of only four players in the program to record 1,700 digs. She led the conference in that statistic in 2018 with 708. She played on the ‘17 ECAC title-winning team and the successful ‘18 team that also won 30 games.
