Julian Batts plays college basketball out of state, so friends and family usually can watch his games only online.
But Batts played a game close to home — as close as the schedule would allow — and achieved a career milestone for the wacthful eyes of local fans.
Batts, a Jeannette product and senior basketball player at Long Island-Brooklyn, scored his 1,000th career point Sunday when the Sharks visited St. Francis (Pa.) in Loretto.
He hit the mark with a free throw with 2 minutes, 29 seconds to play in the first half. Batts finished with 11 points, three rebounds and pair of steals in a 74-71 loss to the Red Flash.
Batts, who has started all 29 games for LIU (16-18, 8-8 NEC), is one of the few male players from Jeannette to score 1,000 point in high school and in college. He is second on the Jayhawks’ scoring list, behind Terrelle Pryor, with 1,769 points.
Jordan Thomas also topped 1,000 points at Jeannette and later, at Seton Hill.
