Westmoreland campus clippings: Bryce Butler fitting in at West Liberty

One of the reasons Bryce Butler wanted to play at West Liberty was because of the Hilltoppers fast-paced style.

The freshman swingman is blending in quite well.

Butler, a former Latrobe standout, posted his first collegiate double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds as West Liberty (14-3, 9-2 Mountain East Conference) downed Urbana, 99-70, for its eighth straight win.

Butler is averaging 9.2 points and 4.7 rebounds in 20.4 minutes.

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior forward Cody Spaid scored a career-high 24 points on 10-of-11 shooting and added eight rebounds and three steals in an 84-81 win over visiting Hilbert. The Bobcats (15-3, 11-2 AMCC) improved to 9-0 at home in Chambers Hall. Junior guard Matt Johnson added 20 points, junior Cam Seigfreid (Penn-Trafford) had 15 and junior Torian Jenkins added 14. Hilbert made a 14-2 run early in the second half before UPG pushed back with a 10-0 run after a technical foul on the Hawks.

The previous game, Johnson put up 20 points, Spaid and Seigfreid added 15 each and sophomore Jojo France chipped in 13 in an 84-79 win over Franciscan.

Seton Hill: Senior Nate Davis scored a career-high 34 points and surpassed the 1,500-point mark for his career in an 86-75 win over Edinboro. Davis made 11 of 20 shots, including 5 of 7 3-pointers, and went 7 for 7 from the free-throw line.

Shippensburg: Junior Jake Biss (Latrobe) was named the PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Week. He averaged 22.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds over a pair of wins against Kutztown and Lock Haven.

Biss scored 27 points, going 10 of 19 from the field and making a career-high five 3-pointers, in a 94-82 win over Kutztown. Biss added three assists and two steals for the Raiders.

He followed with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists in an 88-70 win at Lock Haven for the (16-3, 12-1 PSAC).

Women’s basketball

Grove City: Junior forward Allison Podkul (Hempfield) tied a career high with 18 points and added eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in an 84-65 victory over Waynesburg.

Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Sidney McCully had a career game as UPG extended its winning streak to six games with a 69-51 win over Franciscan. McCully made 5 of 6 shots from 3-point range and scored a career-high 21 points for the Bobcats (10-7, 8-4), who had 36 bench points.

Junior Shaquoia McCray added 13 points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore Maddie Sitler had 13 points and four assists.

Wrestling

Iowa: Junior 125-pounder Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) improved to 18-0, and senior 174-pounder Michael Kemerer (Franklin Regional) moved to 8-0 with victories for the top-ranked Hawkeyes in a 24-10 victory over No. 4 Ohio State.

No. 1-ranked Lee has won his last five matches by technical fall, outscoring his opponents, 84-1.

Senior Luke Pletcher (Latrobe), ranked No. 1 at 141, was a winner for the Buckeyes.

Pitt: Redshirt sophomore Micky Phillippi (Derry) moved to 133 pounds and picked up his 17th win of the season with a pin as the 10th-ranked Panthers overwhelmed Duke, 50-0.

Pitt-Johnstown: The Division II fourth-ranked Mountain Cats went on the road to defeat Seton Hill, 34-9, as senior Chris Eddins (Greensburg Salem) and No. 4 Devin Austin (Penn-Trafford), a redshirt senior, picked up wins. Eddins, a two-time defending NCAA champion, won by pin at 149 pounds, while Austin scored a major decision at 165.

Redshirt senior Austin Shaw (Greensburg Salem) and redshirt junior Billy Bowlen won for the Griffins at 157 and 197.

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Jaden Datz (Southmoreland) picked up a decision for the Presidents at 174 pounds in a 45-6 win over Penn State Fayette.
