Westmoreland campus clippings: Franklin Regional grad Peticca wins golf event at Grove City
Senior Ben Peticca was a Presidents’ Athletic Conference second-team selection last season with the Washington & Jefferson golf team.
The Franklin Regional grad might be heading for an upgrade as far as postseason honors go.
Peticca carded a 1-over-par 73 for a two-shot victory at the McBride-Behringer-Allen Invitational at Grove City Country Club.
He helped the Presidents to a second-place finish as a team.
Grove City: Senior Zack Spang (Hempfield) shot 81 to tie for 11th at the 16th annual McBride-Behringer-Allen Invitational at Grove City Country Club.
Notre Dame: Sophomore Palmer Jackson (Franklin Regional) tied for 11th place with an 8-under 208 (70-68-70) at the Stitch Intercollegiate in Cary, N.C. The Fighting Irish finished second overall at 39-under.
Penn State Altoona: Senior Jacob Mrvos (Norwin) tied for 10th at the Penn State Division III Challenge at Toftrees Golf Course with an 82.
Mrvos followed that performance with an 80 to tie for sixth at the Penn State Altoona Invitational at Sinking Valley Country Club.

Baseball
Kansas State: Junior Zach Kokoska (Latrobe) hit his team-leading 12th home run of the season in a 9-2 loss to No. 3 Texas. The total ranks third in the nation in NCAA Division I.
Penn State: Redshirt freshman Josh Spiegel (Penn-Trafford) is hitting .278 over 20 starts since joining the Nittany Lions from Oklahoma State. He has six doubles, three home runs, 12 RBIs and 11 runs.

Women’s tennis
Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats (5-0) clinched the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular-season championship with an 8-1 win over La Roche. It is just the second conference title for the Bobcats in program history, and first since 2015.
UPG locked up the top seed in the AMCC Tournament, set to begin April 24 at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie.
Singles winners in the clinching match for the Bobcats were sophomore Kelsey Murphy, sophomore Alycia Zummo (Jeannette), freshman Abigail Rosman, freshman Emily Ruhlman and freshman Cathryn Rossi.
The doubles teams of Ruhlman and Rosman, and Murphy and fershman Stephania Pantelas also picked up victories.

Men’s track & field
Allegheny: Freshman Jacob Boord (Hempfield) won the javelin title at the Marv Frye Invitational in Ohio with a throw of 55.05 meters.
Seton Hill: Junior Sam Hartman won the 110- and 400-meter hurdles, and sophomore Hunter Martin (Belle Vernon) took first in the triple jump at the Edward Frye Invitational. Hartman’s times of 13.97 seconds (110) and 52.2 (400) are program records.

Women’s track & field
Clarion: Sophomore Jenna Uncapher (Hempfield) tied for fifth on the program’s all-time performance list in the high jump with a mark of 1.60 meters at the Ed Fry Invitational at IUP. She finished third in the event. Her previous best was 1.56 in 2019.
DePaul: Sophomore Mackenna Orie (Hempfield) was named Big East Field Athlete of the Week after she broke a school record in the shot put and finished second at the Louisville Invitational. Orie threw 15.76 meters for the top mark in the conference.
Her distance of 49.07 meters in the discus ranks second in the Big East this season.
Seton Hill: Junior Sydney Wolf set a program record in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 14.35 seconds), and sophomore teammate Darby Roth also broke the previous mark in the event (2:17.17) at the Edward Frye Invitational.
Grad student Sarah Johnson also took first in the 400 hurdles (1:03.79)

Pitt: Redshirt freshman Luke Mort (Greensburg Central Catholic) has played in 12 games, including three starts, for the Panthers, who won their first ACC divisional title. He has one goal and four shots on goal.

Men’s lacrosse
Grove City: Junior Keith Torrillo (Latrobe) scored his first goal of the season in an 18-1 win over Chatham.
Seton Hill: Grad student Logan Maloni, a key attacker for the Griffins, was named the Great Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week, and his teammate, junior faceoff specialist Logan Gray, was named the conference’s top defensive player.
Maloni had three goals and two assists, and Gray won 12 faceoffs, including one to open overtime, as No. 5 Seton Hill got past 16th-ranked Frostburg State, 12-11.
Maloni leads the team with 38 points (17 goals and 21 assists). Gray has won 68% of his faceoffs.

Women’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: Senior Kate Kada had five goals, and Alyssa Ferrence added three as the Griffins (7-0, 6-0 PSAC) powered past IUP, 18-9, for their seventh straight win.
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Becca Ghion (Yough) had a career-high three goals and an assist as the Presidents defeated Bethany, 18-3.
Waynesburg: Sophomore Eve O’Sullivan (Latrobe) had a hat trick, and sophomore Rachel Caldwell (Ligonier Valley) had a goal and two assists, but the Yellow Jackets fell 19-7 to Westminster.
