Kadyn Hannah did not need much adjustment time as a freshman on the La Roche men’s basketball team.
The Franklin Regional alum stepped into the starting five from Day 1 and has helped push the Redhawks (5-5) to four straight wins.
The statement game for the 6-foot-5 forward came Saturday when La Roche defeated Alfred State, 94-80.
Hannah poured in a career-high 30 points and did so in a tidy fashion. He only played 18 minutes but made 15 of 16 shots. His previous high was 20 points in a 91-82 win over Hilbert. Hannah is averaging 10.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in 20.8 minutes.
Lehigh: Junior guard Reed Fenton (Latrobe) scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds to help Lehigh (4-11) to an 85-81 win over Colgate.
Shippensburg: Grad guard Jake Biss (Latrobe) had 11 points as the Raiders (9-3, 6-1 PSAC) defeated Seton Hill, 86-72. He followed that with nine points, three assists and three steals in a 75-64 victory at Millersville.
West Liberty: Sophomore Bryce Butler (Latrobe) had 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished nine assists, making 7 of 14 field goals, as the Hilltoppers improved to 13-1 with a 101-90 victory over Glenville State.
Women’s basketball
Marian: Sophomore guard Jayla Wehner (Norwin) had 10 points and three rebounds off the bench in a 70-57 victory over Huntingdon.
Wehner has played in 15 games as a key reserve for the Knights, averaging 4.1 points over 14.4 minutes.
Pitt-Greensburg: Playing just its fourth game in a month, UPG used a fast start to top visiting Medaille, 75-56. Junior Sidney McCully led the way with 19 points, connecting on five 3-pointers, and freshman Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) scored 18, with three 3s for the Bobcats (8-2, 3-0 AMCC).
Slippery Rock: Redshirt freshman guard Bella Long (Penn-Trafford) made all three of her 3-point attempts for nine points in 17 minutes of action for the Rock (10-2, 6-2 PSAC) in a 65-62 victory over Clarion.
Westminster: Senior Magen Polczynski (Norwin) had a career-high five steals as the Titans defeated Waynesburg, 65-50.
Wrestling
Bucknell: Sophomore Kurt Phipps (Norwin) picked up two wins at 133 pounds, giving him 13 for the season, as the Bison (6-2) defeated LIU (29-10) and Hofstra (21-15) in New York. Against Hofstra, Phipps scored a reversal in the final 10 seconds to defeat freshman Ty Cymmerman (Latrobe), 4-2.
Pitt: Redshirt senior Micky Phillippi (Derry) went 2-0 as the 21st-ranked Panthers split a dual-doubleheader, defeating Army, 29-10, and losing to No. 3 Michigan, 29-12. Phillippi scored a major decision and a regular decision at 133 pounds.
Seton Hill: Coming off a layoff because of a pair of covid postponements, the Griffins went 3-0 and improved to 4-1 for the season at the Kutztown Duals.
Senior Frank Bonura (125 pounds), 141-pound redshirt senior Joel Cawoski (Latrobe), Bryce Wilks, 285-pound sophomore John Meyers (Greensburg Salem), grad student Tyler Alberts (157) and redshirt senior Logan McKoy (149) went 2-0.
Virginia: Grad student Jarod Verkleeren (Hempfield) picked up a win at 149 pounds as the Cavaliers defeated SIUE, 34-3. Verkleeren is 5-2 on the season and has 37 career wins. He transferred from Penn State.
Washington & Jefferson: Senior Jaden Datz (Southmoreland) finished second at the Waynesburg Invitational. Datz went 3-1 at 174 pounds, including a 20-7 major decision over Kiah Smith of Rio Grande, and a 4-1 decision against Austin Gibson of Fairmont State in the semifinals.
Football
Saint Vincent: Senior wide receiver Molayo Irefin finished was the top Division III receiver in the nation for all-purpose yards. He had 919 yards receiving (on 68 catches), 77 rushing yards, 106 yards on punt returns and 525 on kick returns for a total of 1,620.
