Bill Beckner

Penn State Behrend senior defender Andrew Mastovich (Franklin Regional) was named the AMCC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. He was one of the leaders of a defense that allowed just five goals in conference play last season and posted 10 shutouts. Behrend is the favorite to win the conference after reaching the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 and finishing 16-4-2.

Pitt-Greensburg: Former standouts Matt Bisceglia and Nick Piccirilli will join coach Marc Bucci’s staff this fall.

Bisceglia played goalkeeper at Kiski Area and Robert Morris, and Piccirilli, a Center graduate, was an attacking forward at Seton Hill.

Piccirilli is the SCS United Academy Director for the 8U, 9U and 10U programs. His coaching experience includes the New York Red Bulls Regional Development Schools and Training Programs and the Eastern New York Olympic Development Program. He also has coached Central Valley and Avonworth.

WCCC: In his college debut and his team’s season opener, freshman Ethan Turnbull (Greensburg Salem) had a hat trick, including the winning goal, in a 5-4 overtime win over Allegany (Md.).

Even more significant was the victory snapped a 40-game winless streak for the Wolfpack dating to 2016.

Women’s soccer

Ohio: Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Wexell (Norwin) made her first collegiate start in net for the Bobcats and made three saves in a 2-1, double-overtime victory over Cleveland State.

Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats opened with a pair of wins, 3-0 over Saint Vincent and 2-0 against Wisconsin-Platteville.

Valparaiso: Freshman forward Kiley Dugan (Penn-Trafford) scored her first college goal in a 2-2 tie with Wright State.

Dugan, the reigning Tribune-Review Player of the Year, has started all four games for Valpo.

Men’s cross country

Saint Vincent: Senior Will Greene was named PAC Runner of the Week. Greene finished second at the 118-runner Westminster Invitational with a time of 25 minutes, 28.93 seconds.

Women’s volleyball

Saint Vincent: Freshman setter Carly Augustine (Latrobe) was named PAC Rookie of the Week after leading the Bearcats to a 3-1 start. She had 78 assists, 41 kills, 31 digs and 10 aces during that stretch.

Seton Hill: The Griffins’ season-opening plans were changed because of Hurricane Dorian. The Bahama House Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla., was canceled because of the storm. Seton Hill instead will play in the Ferris State tournament this weekend in Big Rapids, Mich.

Football

Robert Morris: Redshirt sophomore Bussy Remaley (Hempfield) has returned after missing last season with an injury. Remaley started at right tackle in the Colonials’ 38-10, season-opening loss to Buffalo.
